Yeah. Getting a bigger truck means you can get a bigger trailer. But along with it comes a bigger hit to the wallet.

All the 5/8 ton diesel trucks have abysmal mpg when towing near their capacity. If you don't tow that much it's just a minor hit to the wallet, but if you don't have a trailer yet might as well go bigger.

After paying more for diesel package, diesel fuel, DEF, oil changes, etc... a 3/4 ton gasser will be a better move. That being said, this is Tacoma world so back to the topic. A Tacoma can tow a "reasonable" amount. Is it designed to tow for a living? No. I tow some smaller stuff around town and within 300-400 miles. I take my time, watch my temps, and I have great results. My trailers all have brakes on them. Pulling and stopping are different games. I think you are choosing a good rig and I'm glad you are aware that there are limits. Wind resistance is a huge factor when towing. The Tacoma is a light truck that gets pushed around easy. Keep your head straight and set your truck up right. Change tour tranny fluid every 50k as well as the rear diff. You'll be fine.
