Looking for a bed cover

I have a 2023 OR with a short bed. I find myself using the bed frequently for power tools, chainsaws, etc., so I really need something for the bed. For a while, I was looking at the Diamondback HD covers, but the prices on them have increased sharply.

    Mostly, I want...
    1. Hard cover
    2. Relatively easy to remove
    3. Waterproof or close to it
    4. Locking
    5. Around $1000 to $1500
    6. Made in U.S.
It would be nice to have the ability to mount a rack at the same time, but that's not essential.

For a while, I thought about a camper shell, but I would be removing it five or six times a year, and I have heard that is a major ordeal.

If Diamondback is the closest that I can get to what I want, I might just buy one while they're on sale back to the prices they were a few years ago. Just figured I would ask around and see what other good options are out there.

I take my DiamondBack off of my 21 OR quite often. 4 bolts and it's off. Takes me 5 minutes to get it off, but probably 10+ to put it back on. I do have the SE, so each piece is not very heavy, which probably makes it a lot easier. The only concern is making sure the big panels are safe while I am storing it (which isn't too long since it is usually on the truck.)

I haul tools and valuables in my truck, and the security of the Diamondback is worth the hassle when I need to remove it. I have had lesser tonneau covers in the past, and I can't shop without being worried someone is going to break in and steal my tools (happened once before with a fiberglass top with a cheap lock).

My top is in the NorCal bayarea, and I am selling my Tacoma, if you are anywhere near and decide you want to go the diamondback route, DM if you are interested in a good condition used one with no dings or dents and want to save money off of buying new. (would be local pick-up only though, I won't ship it.)

    Good luck with your search.

Find a used OEM cover for cheap, they are out there! They are tough as nails and come off in a snap. Why spend a premium on something that will get the living shit beat out of it.

I had not seen these before. They look excellent. Thanks!

I’m in the Midwest, unfortunately. Otherwise, I would definitely be interested.

The OEM covers that I found are over $1k new now. I’ve nothing against buying used and would actually prefer it in some ways, but there’s nothing close to me on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

I don't blame anyone for wanting a hard top to protect your tools, but they can still break into it, in less than a minute if they really want to, not to mention the same if they want the whole truck.

I really love my oem soft top, which I can easily throw in the back seat if I'm on the road somewhere, and need to fill the box.

I had one of these for 10 years on my 2nd gen. I put one on my 3rd gen a few weeks after purchase last year. It keeps gear relatively secure and dry. It’s easy to take on and off. It’s not heavy. But it’s bulky. My wife and I can remove it easily. I camp under it sometimes, as well.

Yes, yes, and yes. BUT they leak like crazy. And that fact was the first disclaimer out of the salesperson's mouth as we started the paperwork on my '23. He said the top leaks and do not bring it in for service because there's nothing they can do. Ended up getting these HUSKY containers (couldn't fit any better than they do) to keep my tools dry after removing the space hog oem bed boxes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Bakflip Mx4. The cover is probably the most flush mounted cover on the market and it looks great on Tacoma's.

    ^ what he said ^
Mine came with LoMax. It folds into thirds and easy to remove also it has been water tight.
Takes like 10 seconds to remove and to replace -literally

I have the rails installed but can’t seem to get the front of the cover to engage. These little gray plastic brackets, which are not pictured in the instructions, seem to be preventing the cover from latching. I see no way that they could. Almost seems like the wrong rails for the Tacoma. Any pictures of what this should look like?

The brackets on the cover slide in under those gray tabs... you need to slide the cover in at 45 angle and once all the way forward then lower it to the flat position...

Maybe I didn’t have the angle right. I’ll try again later tonight.

Got it now. I think I was holding at too low of an angle from too far back and didn’t want to force it. Thanks, @truckalter!

I found myself in the same situation, needing a good bed cover. I went with the Bakflip Mx4 and I have to say... the mounting system is terrible. The cover itself is very nice but the way it mounts to the bed rails is terrible. Spent 2 days trying to adjust the mounting so it wouldnt dip inwards when tightening the rails down. For the cost of the cover I wouldnt recommend this thing to anyone.

Luke from @truckalter helped me last year with a Lomax hard fold cover. Luke is great, helped me a bunch troubleshooting after purchase.Very happy with it overall. As he points out the arms slide over the gray tabs (photo attached). I did have some leaking in the typical spots near the cab corners. As others have suggested, I purchased 1/2 inch high density foam on Amazon, removed to cab top rail, cut to the foam to fit end of rail, then reinstalled, used a putty knife to slide the ends in to keep foam intact. Seems to work well, but not perfectly water tight (photo below). Cover removes/replaces in 5 minutes if ever needed.
    Happy Holidays
