I know a shot will probably not kill a bear, I am hoping more that the sound/getting hit by a piece of metal going 3000 fps will deter it. plus bears aren't a terribly big worry for me, I grew up around bears almost my whole life. its things like this[IMG]
Found dead just minutes from my where my dad used to live. It took down horses fought pit bulls and won. Locals said it was something straight out of a stephen King novel. It was even featured on a real life monster show on the history channel I believe. That and well the normal mountain lions, coyotes, and wolves.

they say its the face of all evil, they say it once fought 3 grizzly bears at once and won, the only thing that I know is they call it the stig!

actually I think they said it was a dog/wolf mutant thing, but it actually caused some terror. It actually went through my dads back yard.

Might have been mentioned already, and I posted on it in the ultimate camping thread, but...

    http://www.truflareusa.com/productcatalog.htm

Bear bangers are a decent alternative to a firearm. Weigh next to nothing. Not affected by the wind as bear spray is, and serve a double purpose if you get flares as well..

As someone mentioned above, if you are trying to stop a charging grizzly you better be a good shot and quick draw. More than likely the bear will be on you before you have a chance to shoot. If you have time before the confrontation the bear banger will do the same job as a warning shot.

As far as other animals, 99.99% are afraid of the sound of a gunshot... including wolves, moose etc...

Obviously if you are able, and willing to carry a rifle that'll be the best protection and in heavy griz country probably a good idea. but for every day outdoor excursions this works well. And you can always afford the weight of bear spray for a last ditch effort.

For anyone who hasn't seen bear spray set off.. it is orange so you can see where the spray goes. I.e. if the wind is bringing it to you. Whether you'd have the presence of mind to check that when spraying depends on the person. I have had a friend use it and get it on us. Wasn't pleasant and was only a little whif.

    Thread revival!

still didnt get my gun :( main reason was that I was a broke ski bum did get to shoot these guns that shoot a line over chairlifts to do chairlift evacs though, the gun took .22 blanks. Really bad recoil though seeing ass how the projectile was a piece of hard plastic about the size of a small nerf football.

I have decided that when the money and time is right to get a Mossberg 500 though.

It amazes me how many people respond that you need a pistol because they never read the thread.

I have little experience with guns, but from what I have read, it sounds like you should have bear spray regardless of what else you get. Anything you get should be kept handy. Remember, a beer in the hand is worth two in the fridge!

No love for the remington 870? That's the shotgun of choice up here in AK, where bears are no strangers to us. It's not uncommon in the largest town (anchorage) to see bears every day. It's also not uncommon seeing 12 year olds with shotguns because of this. I think you'll have better luck with the remington. Just my .02

you aught to look into either a 30-30 or a 45-70. both lever action rifles. they are short and fairly light weight, easy to maneuver and provide a hell of a punch. we call em brush guns because they are durable, small, simple, and powerful. I know you said bears arent your biggest concern, and I would agree a wolf or 12 is far more likely to see you as dinner, jsut from my personal experience with bears atleast. either of those rifles would be able to put down a wolf or coyote with no problem

honestly if your looking for a gun get a 45-70 lever action stainless marlin i had one for awhile for packing and it was an accurate and rediculously powerful gun and is going to pack way more of a punch on a bear if needed than any shotgun regardless of shot. just my 2 cents!

Taurus judge or S&W governor I think it's called, if it hasn't been named yet you can put slugs, snake shot, home defense bullet, just a very versatile gun for your situation I would think
