I recently purchased a 2014 2WD Prerunner - very basic model, only option is Convenience package.

I'm looking to purchase a sturdy Tonneau that will provide some level of security. After I purchased the truck, I noticed the tailgate does not lock. So I'm thinking I'll need one of those covers that overlap the top of the tailgate in order for it to be secured. I'm going to put in some cargo nets, so I can essentially set up something like a traditional trunk, but I'll need to be able to lock it. Of course, I'm looking to spend a ton of $

Any suggestions? Many thanks for your help.
    Jim

You'll find that many people on this forum have asked the same questions. I believe there are lots of similar threads which can help you in your quest for a locking tonneau cover.

My personal preference in locking tonneau covers is the Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite...

Another option is the Bakflip g2 but expensive.

N-Fab 3" Main Tube Textured Nerf Bars (T0580CC-TX), Toyota OEM Bed Extender, Swapped Entune Plus for Entune w/ Nav, Undercover SE Tonneau, TRD Pro wheels, Falken Wildpeak AT3W's (265/70/17)
If you don't want to have to worry about a pop-and-lock, you could go with a Undercover SE. It's a solid, one-piece tonneau (doesn't fold up into three pieces). It comes up and over the rear of the tailgate preventing it from being opened with the cover down. The cover includes a locking mechanism with key to lock it down. It's really a great cover, and sturdy as all hell. Not very hard for one person to take off and off if you needed to remove it. SUPER EASY to take on and off and if you have a second person. It's as simple as loosening two hand screws for one end and two little switches to get the hydraulics off on the other end. The only issue with doing it with one person is that you are trying to manipulate a large object into place by itself. It's only about 60 lbs though, so its very doable.

edit : I should mention that the real catalyst for me choosing this one was that I got it for only $350 on craigslist. I was originally planning to get a G4 or similar. The nice thing about this over the folding ones is that you don't have to worry about any weather stripping to get it waterproof. The way this molds over the edges of the bed, it's 100% waterproof. I took a hose around all of the edges and I couldn't get water to seep into the bed.

Another vote for the Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite and the Pop and Lock. It's a big investment but it was absolutely worth it. With the G4 you don't need the Pop and Lock as the cover secures the gate when closed, but adding it negates the need to drill holes in your tailgate and the step of having to lift the back hatch to open or close the gate.

I opted for the power/electric lock but you could do the manual one.

You can open the back or front hatch independently of each other and they both have locks.

I'll add another vote for the G4 Elite. That and a Pop & Lock has made our truck even more usable.

    Hi Carl,

Curious how you feel about the Pop & Lock for your '08 model.

I have an '09 Tacoma and both the power / electric and the manual Pop & Lock products on Amazon that fit 2005-'15 Tacomas got relatively poor reviews compared to the Pop & Lock PL5400 which works on 2010 model and later.

I haven't had any issues with it and I open it just about every day. In the reviews people mention strapping a sponge to the mechanism so it doesn't rub or bang against the metal. Someone at P&L must have been paying attention as mine came with a black plastic sponge thing already zip tied to it.

Another "complaint" I read was the mechanism is loud when you unlock it. It is, but so what? I don't see how that is an issue...

All in all I'm happy with it and have had zero issues.

I ordered the g4 elite last night. Now I'm just waiting for them to ship. Hopefully they ship reasonably fast.
