That section of the rear is now only about 1/8" thick when new .

Hence it tends to rust through if not kept after when seeing lots of Liquid Brine and salt.

You can get complete axle assembles for as low as $300 on Craigslist. Don’t waste your effort on fixing that
What radio and axle do you have ?

Hi, I'm New to this Forum.

I've looked around and have gotten very helpful info.
Want to know if someone can throw me a lifeline :)

    I Have a 08 single cab Tacoma 2WD 2 TR engine.
I have a leak on my rear DIFF and want to know if I can take the rear Diff Housing from 2ndGen with a bigger engine and replace my rear diff housing.

I have a similar issue that this guy encountered.
    take a look for reference:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/looking-for-a-new-rear-differential.681762/

May I mention I live in Costa Rica Toyotas here are huge, Hilux,Land Cruisers are everywhere TACOMAS not so much, and finding parts is not that hard but Not a lot of people have knowledge over here working on Tacoma Trucks .... so I wanna ask the real Connaisseurs. :)
I was able to find a Rear diff housing that was on a 2nd gen 4.0L. Mine is 2.7 L.
I'm not gonna change anything from my diff gonna keep the same ratio and gears just planning on replacing the housing.
I wanna buy the part so I can just have my guy take it down put the rear diff in the new housing and mount it back on.

It has the same REar Diff 8-inch case.

My question is will the housing work?

Are the measurements horizontally from the left rear drum to the other right drum the same?

What other factors do I need to take into consideration before purchasing?

Any insight would be of great Help!!

Is it possible to take pictures of your problem area?

Was your Truck imported after years in the USA rust belt that your dealing with a rusted through axle housing??

Lots of surf fishing with the truck door deep in salt water??

I had the exact same problem with my '02 TRD in PA -- salt! I drained the diff, wire brushed the ball thoroughly with a drill and dried out everything as best I could with a butane torch. Then I coated everything below the fill hole with JB Weld. I laid it on thick, let it dry thoroughly and gave it two additional coats for good measure. When all was done I gave it a few coats of Rustoleum. This lasted two full years until I hit on a permanent fix -- a Prerunner axle from a Fla junkyard. I considered the welded plate repair, but it seems like you might have to take off the axle to do it. It's not a terrible job, but it's kind of tedious. Prerunners, by the way, have the same locking diff as our trucks -- they're identical in every way -- and a lot of junkyards sell them for way cheaper than they do the 4wd version.

Yeah, Its A truck from the Rustbelt as you say, the pictures I have are not that great it is very similar to the pictures on the link I placed as reference... not as bad mine still holds up but I really wanna just swap the housing.

I do take the car to the beach and travel here the roads are not so reliable as in the states so I just wanna have a good fix so I don't have to worry again.

Thanks for the insight, what do you mean by welded plate repair?
It has already been worked don the leak with the epoxy type of sealant as a temporary fix but the temperature on the roads here and the rough - tough terrain I sometimes travel on makes it kind of a hassle having to worry bout rusty, leaky housing.

I wish we had Junyards like in the states here in Costa Rica.

if you or anyone by any chance have good parts salesman or connections that are trustworthy and ship internationally I would appreciate it, I'm probably gonna run into little setbacks in the future.

Several weld on covers are on the market you just cut off the rusted one and replace with the new one.

If your very careful with your heat input you can weld the cover on without stripping the whole axle housing.

Making one from scratch you just need to get the fill plug in the correct spot.

I would think a complete axle shipping would be quite expensive.
