A hard shell clamshell design or a ground tent/sleep in the bed.

The fold out ones are a lot of money, weight, and drag just to have a tent you have to take forever to set up and take down same as a ground tent all on your roof (not to mention not being able to drive away from it without putting it all back away first).

A RTT that’s convenient and opens with a clip or two may well have its place for someone who sleeps in it many night of the year and move a lot. It’s great to cut out camp set up and tear down when you’re at a new camp every single evening. The wife and I have our 4Runner set up so the only thing we EVER need to move is the kitchen to the passenger seat when we go to bed and back to the back when we hit the road. Great because we’re never in the same place for two nights in a row.

If you camp hardly ever, RTT is a waste of money.

If you’re moving a lot, one that has long setup/takedown and you can’t pull away from it is lame.

Just opinions based on years of vehicle travel and living out of a vehicle for up to a month+ at a time many times on trips. I’m sure people who have an IG account will flame on. ✌
