I've been researching places to move to and just discovered that Texas freezes property taxes at age 65. That's a big thing for me as I'm getting killed in Pennsylvania with a drunken sailor school board with no spending restraint or common sense.

The panhandle area puts me much closer to Colorado where the grandkids are. All suggestions and advice welcome.

Texas has no state income tax so they get you with property taxes. I would say the average is about 4k per year before you hit 65. I lived there for 28 years. It will drop about 1 k after 65. I love Texas but would check other states.

Yea, the freezing of property taxes at 65 is a big draw for me. No such thing in Pennsylvania and I'm in the smallest school district in the county which graduates maybe 75 to 80 kids a year and has the highest tax rate in the county. Plus, they are about to drop $33 million to build a new elementary school. Things are only going to get worse as far as property taxes.

If you looking for a decent size city, Midland,Lubbock or Abilene would be the choices. Also in Texas on the you’ll get the just passed 100k exemption on primary home.

I live in the Amarillo area. I like the Texas Panhandle. If you want to live even closer to Colorado, there are towns that get awful close, but they do not have the creature comforts that Amarillo has.
