I am going out to measure the bed today, but I am sure that there is more to it than that. Any experiences you have had might be useful. I want to get a tool box for day to day and a camper shell for when needed. Please let me know any tips or any helpful advice.

Not much besides fitment and seal to the rear window, if you're looking I have a camper shell for sale for the 6ft bed dark green

    Pretty much stock right now
I bought a used ARE aluminum shell for my 97, which I still have, but my 00 came with matching ARE MX fiberglass shell that I keep on all the time. I keep moving to my new trucks even though the color doesn't match. I'll paint it black some day.

One thing to note is that the rear window on reg cabs is straight up and down, and on an xtracab it is angled. Get the right one for your cab if you want a nice tight fit. Look at some pictures and you will see what I mean.
