My husband and I (and another couple) are planning a trip next year - probably the 3rd week of January of next year.

Here's the resort we're currently looking at:
    http://www.applevacations.com/showHotel.do?lastActive=&hotelCode=214315&command=showHotel

We were looking up the weather history ....
    http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/MMUN/2009/1/23/MonthlyHistory.html

Just curious to know if anyone has been here during this time of year?

What's the ocean temperatures? Is it warm enough to swim in the ocean?

What other things would you recommend doing while we're there?

Any tips, hints, info - would be greatly appreciatted. We've never done an ALL-inclusive vacation before and have no idea what to expect. It's been a long time since we've seen the Caribean and I'm excited to go. I won't wanna come back to PA's cold winter temps after that week is over.

    Thanks!!!

I went Last Summer because my parents sent me and my friends as a grad present. But I would suggest going to Tulum (i'm not sure how its spelled) It’s the on Mayan ruins on the ocean in the world. It really cool and the beach there is amazing. Or xel ha is great too. You can swim with the dolphins there and it in the jungle. Also they have a place where you can swim in underground caves. If you are able to I would rent a car and drive to Playa del Carman. It been rated some of the best beaches in the world and we loved them and they weren't all packed like the ones down hotel row. The water is PERFECT!!! The bluest I’ve seen besides St. Martten. Hotel wise we stayed at the ME hotel and it was VERY VERY nice and very modern on the inside but the down side it is not all-inclusive. Food/Drinks around Cancun KILL you!! It is very Americanized there. At night if you do want to go to a club the one that people of all ages go to is Coco Bongo. It’s like a show and a dance club. One tip is you can drink in public there but it CAN NOT be in a glass bottle. IDK way but I was the cops take some guy away for that. Also if some tries to give you a ripped or slight torn bill as change DO NOT take it!!!! In Mexico torn pesos are no good and no one (not even banks will take them) I would take the little bus around town. EVERYONE even the people at the Ritz take it and its 6.5 pesos each way.

    Sorry about the long read.

My girlfriend and I went in March. and it was perfect. from my understanding, its always warm enough there to swim. We stayed at the Royal Solaris. Apple Vacations are great, but dont get suckered into their"packages". Your resort will have the same packages /activities for cheaper.
i like that apple picks you up at the airport and gets you back to the airport. Makes you feel a little safer.
i reccomend getting a massage, drinking alcohol, and chillin on the beach.
Beware of drinking the water. Buy Bottled water!

PS: the Clubs can be a lot of fun too! We did a bar crawl that was pretty fun! Busses are easy to get around on.
Take American cash, as it is excepted everywhere, even though prices marked as pesos.
Snorkeling is awesome. Swim with dolphins etc. Have fun!!!

    Awesome!!

The Mayan Ruins will definately be on our 'to do' list. My husband is really into that kinda thing (me too - but him mostly). :D

SWIM with the dolphins?? OOOoooo that's always been a dream for me!!
    (corny, I know...but I'm a girl - laugh).

I'm gonna make a huge list with all the suggestions on it and make myself a map & to-do list.

I plan on getting lots of beach time (gotta have that dark tan when you go back to work in the middle of January). Lots of drinking....
I'll have to drop some lbs in the next months just so I can gain it back during vacation!! YIPPEEE!!

Thanks for info!! Keep it coming!

I would have like to see some ruins as well, but my GF wasnt too into it.
Hell I was happy as could be doing nothing but sitting on the beach and drinking. Either you can relax on vacation, or you can do stuff. I like a little of both, but sometimes like to do nothing!
Dont forget sunscreen, as the sun is very intense. Believe me, you will get burned!!!
And as I said earlier, Apple may try to include added things for you to do for a price, but i would just wait til I get there and sign up then.
If you are not a real picky eater, you will be satisfied with the all inclusive meals etc, but dont expect things to taste good like hear in the states.
Maybe try an authentic restarant one evening outside of the hotel.
My GF really wanted to swim with the dophins, but didnt have the extra cash to do so, and i paid for the whole vacation so we didnt do that, but saw others having a great time doing so. If it has been a dream of yours . Dont hesitate and do it!!!

Wife and I went to Dreams Resort (http://www.dreamsresorts.com/drecu/). It's up at the northern point of Cancun. It has three different beaches, it's all inclusive, meals are excellent, swim-up bar, entire spa facility, fitness area, lots of activities, and has it's own lagoon on the property equipped with dolphins... so you don't have to go anywhere to swim with dolphins if you don't want to. If you do want to take a trip somewhere, they have shuttles that take you. You can do everything there. Highly recommended...

BTW, the water there is warm all year round. And recommended trips... definately the Mayan ruins. Very cool. Have fun!

Try to see the ruins in the city of Coba, there you can still climb the steps to the top versus the other one in Chitchen Itza is all blocked off. Also there is a place where you can ride atvs throught the jungle and go swimming in underground caves, I can't remember the name but it's a little further sout of playa del Carmen

i was in riviera maya from dec 26 thru jan 2 and the weather was beautiful. It was mid to upper 80s during the day and probably lower 70s at night. Well worth it. Watch out for the mosquitos

We're booked for the week of January 23rd!! Yippee!!!

cjimenRR or anyone else... anybody do the Mayan Encounter?
It's the one that tours Coba - climb the Nohoch Muule temple, Zipline rappelling, & canoeing/swimming (atleast, that's what the information is telling me).

How's the zipline & rappelling? My only concerns with this is my husbands bad back & shoulders. Granted, he'll have shoulder surgery by then but he still has a slipped disk in his upper back. I wasn't sure how 'physical' the zipline & rapelling was...or if its just something you sit in and ride along?

Our vacation is through Apple - and we're exploring our options for excursions. The snorkeling adventure is a must - we'll have our own snorkels & masks for this. We also wanna look into Jetskis/waverunner and Quad rentals also - gotta do more research on that and I haven't seen anything yet.

    Thanks for the help guys!!

    Awesome!!
There's so many things I wanna do! Not enough time to do them all (and time to relax and do nothing also).

Do you have a link to the charter that you fished from?

How's the language barrier? I know a few small words in spanish but not enough to communicate.

I gotta visit some online airport info. I haven't flown in many years and I hear the regulations & shit are ridiculous (but understandable).

Just watch out for red light, green light! Language barrier on the resort isnt bad, but if you go to fifth ave, theyll try to say they dont understand, but thats bull
