I have a 17 Tacoma that came with the ugly steel wheels. During the warm weather months I have aftermarket wheels on my truck but every year at about this time I have to put the steel wheels and tires back on and they are starting to rust. I hate them but have had no luck finding a decent set of aluminum wheels for the winter months here in NE Ohio. For obvious reasons I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that will eventually be ruined from the salt. I'm just looking for something decent and they don't have to be perfect but presentable. Around here most of the wheels I have seen are all pitted up or damaged. If anyone has a set here in North East Ohio let me know.
Has anyone tried the wheel skins for the steel wheels? Its another option but I question how they would hold up to the salt and other crap they spray on Ohio roads. Any thoughts?

No, but a little sandpaper, a wire brush, and some Rust-oleum rust reformer will go a long way! At the very least, turn those gray steelies into black steelies.

Try out auto scrap yards. Got an OEM aluminum wheel with little to no damage for $60. Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace will probably have cheaper too.

Tried a few junk yards last spring and was told to try to catch a late model wreak when they happen. Most don't make it there. Watch Craig's list too now and then. Tried swap meets and flea markets too. Sooner or later something will turn up. One of my neighbors offered me his FJ rims last winter and told me today he still had them but they are pretty badly pitted to put on my truck. Tires were still mounted and about shot. I think he said $200 last year. I didnt ask today. No point.

The problem with aluminum rims during the winter ....you get corrosion from all the salt which eventually causes your tires to continuously go flat overnight . All the clear coat also goes for a crap . Gotta keep bringing the truck back to the tire shop to dismount and rim buff the oxidized aluminum .

With this said , I use the steel wheels . Wire wheel the rims at the end of every winter , give them a fresh coat of black paint . After the paint is dry I fluid film them and put them into storage .

With aluminum wheels keeping them clean and free of salt and that corrosive crap they use now is critical.
My wifes 13 Sienna still has aluminum wheels that look like new. I wash them every week or after they salt the roads or we drive in a lot of slop.
My previous cars I did the same and they seemed to hold up. Except for my 03 Corolla and 87 B2200 rust was never a problem. I cant complain to much. I drove each of those 11 and 16 years in Ohio winters.

I buy OEM aluminum rims from Ebay for my winter tires (and for the spare also). They hold up well enough for me. I think about $300 for a set of 4 including shipping is about the best price you will find there.
