Looking for ideas for my TRD OR wheels

    Hey guys,

This is my first Toyota ever and am very happy with my Tacoma. Love the feeling of solidity of the truck, the quiet, refined cabin, the sporty looks, and the incredible value for money Toyota packs into these trucks.

However, I have to admit the stock TRD Off-Road wheels are among the ugliest I have ever seen rolling up and down the road.

I think my issue with these wheels is (a) I don’t like the million origami folds and creases on the design, and (b) the sharp contrast between black paint and machined surfaces looks just weird.

I tried those decals you can stick onto the wheels but returned them because they didn’t stick very well.

So I’ve been looking at alternatives: the TRD SEMA 17” wheels look very nice. But I’d prefer to stick with 16” wheels. And I’m not fond of the shiny black 16” wheels on TRD Pros; even less at $200/each.

Some of the best-looking OE 16” wheels I’ve seen are on FJ Cruisers.

Would those of you who have painted or done something creative to your stock OR wheels, or have powder coated used OE FJ Cruiser or 4Runner 16” wheels post pix of what you have done? I am open to seeing the stock OR wheels with larger tires to see if that alone helps.

I am looking for ideas before I get rid of these wheels.

    Thanks!

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Do you like any of the other stock 6 lug Toyota wheels? I went to 17 inch 4 runner wheels from my stock dark SR5 wheels and liked the switch. Reason I say this is that the stock Toyota wheels can be had for a good to great price usually. I got mine from a Toyota dealer for 100 per wheel.

Yes. I particularly like the 4Runner Trail Edition wheels. Power coating everything but the lip might look just b*tching!

    Thanks!

Do you have a lift? If so, how much? And what is the size of those tires?

Wow. I thought your tires were much larger than that!

I guess it goes to show what a big difference a more aggressive tread alone makes.

    That gives me hope... :)

I’m with you on the factory off-road wheels. I was planning on getting the SEMA wheels until I got 2 flats within a week.

I ended up getting a set of Cooper STT Pro tires and mounting them to my factory wheels, until decided on what aftermarket wheels I wanted.

I ended up ordering SCS SR8 wheels in 16” and just swapped the tires.

    Couldn’t be happier.

The size tire you can fit really depends on the wheel that you pick. The more aggressive the offset the harder it will be. I didn’t have to do any trimming and I only rub at full lock in reverse. A little heat molding can fix that.

What a dramatic improvement, even on the stock wheels, just by adding meatier tires!

    Nice.

In Jeep world we normally use wheel "back spacing".

By aggressive offset, do you mean a wheel that gets pushed further out?

Yeah it was. I was happy with the tires , just not the wheels. Needless to say they were only on the factory wheels for about a month.

Yes and in my opinion way better than the OEM SEEMA wheels. 0mm offset. I believe they are 8 inches wide and weight a few pounds less. Have them wrapped in 265/70/17 C rated. I've had the FN pros on for 40k miles and have been very, very happy.

Is that more or less offset than the SEMA wheels?

Do they come with the center caps?

PS - they look deeper dish than the TRDs

They are wider than the 4Runner sema wheels, sema’s Are 7” FN FX are 8” and I’m not sure on the offset on the sema wheels but my guess is +15 FN FX are 0.

Can you post some close up pics of your headlights? I have been debating on blacking out the full headlight or leaving the turn signal chrome like you did. Thanks!
