I've lived outta the back of numerous vehicles off and on for numerous years, mostly vans cause they're easier. I was doing it a long time before this "vanlife" movement start but that's besides the point. I've lived out of this truck and shell for most of last year

I'm 6'2" so sleeping is interesting since I have to sleep diagonally in the bed to fit.

If you're really trying to use it as a secret apartment on CA streets, I recommend you give up the camper insert idea and instead go with a shell, with the cream of the crop being the Leer 122 model. As a long time mobile dweller trust me when I say you're going to stand out like a sore thumb with anything more than that. Even the 122 is pushing it in my opinion for crowded metro areas.

Here's a member that built a camping platform inside a Leer 122, I'd personally do the sleeping platform differently but you'll get the idea

thanks I’ve been living in a van or truck for the last 10 years off and on when not traveling I have a gated warehouse I work at that I can sleep at without getting hassled so that’s why I’m not worried out it. I’ve don’t the shell living and it’s just pretty tight for me I’m 6’6”.

Check Craigslist daily. I scored a lifetime camper last year, best $600 I’ve ever spent

Have you considered a small utility trailer? you could easily have 5x the useable space, room to stand up, cook, a work station, etc.
you could probably buy a used one and outfit it for your $3,000 budget
