Looking for opinions on my 2 1/2 year old frame.

    So as stated above this is what my frame looks like after only 2 1/2 years. Just curious to know if anyone else has had something like this happen with their replaced frame in such a short time. And also do your frames have these horrendous booger welds? They aren't like that on all the welds (4th pic), just some here and there. They look terrible. Just wondering what you guys think. Should I even bother talking to toyota? Or just POR15 it like I did with the rear half? Just seems like a ridiculous amount of rust for such a short period of time.     Frame rust seems to be a big problem, my 2015 has serious spot rust on the frame and the spindles are nothing but surface rust. As for yours ouch. You probably should clean it up and bed line that sucker.

    Holy crap. Thats insane rust for only 2 1/2 yrs! Out west that would probably take 20 years to look that bad!

    I decided to just screw it and give toyota a call, they actually seem like they're working with me, it's something that they really haven't had an issue with and they want to address it. Already have a case number and apparently they're gonna try to get it inspected at some point this week. Be interesting to see if my poor old 03 is gonna go through two skeletons in it's life. Highly doubt anything will happen from toyota, but worth a shot.

    Believe me I know, I had an 89 crown victoria that came from Montana. There wasn't a spec of rust on the whole car. The frame was factory black, and it was so easy to work on because all of the nuts and bolts weren't a rusted mess. Too bad the 302 in it was a total POS. I miss working on rust free vehicles.

    Probably what I'll end up doing, don't have much confidence in Toyota coming through with it. I read your build thread, your frame when you first got it made me feel a bit better about mine. Great job fixing it up, gives me some inspiration because as of right now there's no holes that I can see. So I've gotta get off my ass and make sure it stays that way. I love this truck and I'd like to keep it in good shape as long as I can.

    Pretty much what all my vehicles look like in the spring

    Even pressure washing about every two weeks during the Brine season.

    Really nothing you can do but keep after it
    It is not only Toyota I have a 2014 Chevy looks worse then yours

    After one Brine season

    I am waiting we are sooner or later going to have a major bridge failure during rush hour.

    Wyoming09, it's gonna be sooner, I'm also in New Tripoli and travel 78 every day. Check out the Eastbound 78 RH lane right as it goes over 309. The whole slab is down 3" from the shoulder and sinking more each week. I called Penn Dot over the summer and they were like "Meh, we'll get around to having someone look at it"

    Good lord, that's a lot of rust for being so new! My 96 still has the original frame, and there's barely even any surface rust. But then again, I'm in Virginia.
    I hope Toyota works with you on this!!

    Yeah road salt is a pain. After I power washed it and hammered all the flaking off it actually looks decent, no real deep pitting, just mostly surface rust with scaling paint, gonna have it checked out regardless. It's not amazing, but it's decent. On a positive note though, I went to check my valve shim clearance today and was happy to see that my engine is spotless, for having 173k on it I'm really impressed. Good compression numbers all around and only 1 shim is out of spec. It's on the exhaust side on the 3rd cylinder and it's at .008, How concerned should I be driving around with the shim that tight? I plan to fix it soon but NOBODY around here has the bucket tool or shims. And has anybody had any luck grinding shims down rather than buying new? A local head rebuilder has a surface grinder and said he would do it if I wanted.

    well at least you are still under warranty until 2018 (03 truck plus 15 year extended frame warranty)

    I figured that's how it worked, but they seem to be beating around the bush a bit. After I really looked at the frame after I cleaned it I guess it isn't THAT bad. But one of my uncles stopped by the other day and he told me his was getting replaced, and it was immaculate. No rust on it anywhere that I could see. So I have no idea why his is getting done. Mine looks like its been in the ocean for a year in comparison. I'll cross my fingers I guess.

    sometimes you cant see it but there are spots up under there that are known to break through and one thing for sure is they don't replace it unless there is a rust through hole in it somewhere. he likely never crawled up under there far enough to see it

    Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
    I don't think they warranty replaced frames. They are still the same crappy frames they used when new so it's no surprise that it's rusting already. Better undercoat it while the getting is good.
