    Hi,

    I have a 1999 Prerunner, extended cab, bed size 6.5ft, V4.

I really want a good bed cap that will not leak. I am prepared to pay for a new one if necessary, or a good used one. What kind of online or otherwise resources should I use to find one of correct specification? What companies should I look for? If searching on Craigslist, what keywords should I use? Canopy? Bed cap? Truck cap? Some searches turned up no results, and i live in Portland, OR.

But anyway, even just some places to look for good new ones where I can input my truck specs and find the right one.

    Thanks!

Anyway you could be more polite, but here we go:

    * Put your location under You>Personal Details so it's easy to spot every time you post

    * You don't have a v4 - the cylinders are in a row so it's an inline 4, i4, 4 cyl, 4 banger, 2.7, 3RZ, etc, but definitely not a v4

    * You're looking for a cap that fits an extra cab from the 96-04 model years. Double cab shells are too short and *most* regular cab shells that conform the the back of the cab will either not fit or look funny

    * Best companies are ARE, Leer, and Snugtop, but you will find a lot of off-brand ones for our trucks that are made just fine

    * If you don't want leaks then really seal the gap between the bed and the cap well

    * I always searched CL for Tacoma shell since that covers camper shell and plain old shell, but that's probably a regional name - it only takes a few minutes to try out multiple options so try them all

    * Ask around in the regional section on here for anyone selling one in the PNW as well as the first gen parts section

    * @tony2018 was trying to help and sometimes people have sales work out due to others transporting stuff on road trips and other ingenious methods so you never know when something like that could work out

Good luck finding a cap - the used route is the way to go because you'll pay half price or less most of the time.

I think he meant it might still be for sale...

And one more tip - look at trucks for sale on CL and ask the seller if they'd be willing to sell the cap separately.

    Interesting I don't have a V4. How should I identify it?

Check post 4, I gave you a few options, but for clarification, you have a 2.7 liter 3RZ-fe inline 4.

Unless someone's riding a motorcycle or driving an old European or Soviet car, they're not using a V4 to get around.

If Texas is too far, what's the max distance you'll go to buy one? Sacramento craigslist has a couple for sale usually.

You can use searchtempest.com (formerly Craig's Helper) to search multiple Craigslist locations based on a distance you set from your search zip.
