the truck in question is a 78 ford project truck that i received in a trade. specs are 302 v8, granny low 4 speed transmission, divorced transfer case, and 4.10 gears front and rear. the truck has brand new 42in tires. my question is what ring gear and pinion would be my best option for this truck?? i have very limited use of 4th gear on the open road there is no power. i was thinking 4.88s or 5.13s. any help would be appreciated.

if it makes much difference i figure i would mention that the 302 and 4 speed will more than likely be swapped out to a 460 and automatic trans in the near future.

It all depends on your wheeling style man.
If you like to bump it and hammer down then 4.88's will suit you.
If you'd rather back off and try a different line so you can hit it nice and slow, the 5.13's would be a better choice.
I'd go as low as possible though, 5.38's. :D
