I am trying to wire a dome light in my camper top...and I cannot find a hot wire to tie it into...I know all I need is a hot and a ground, but I have been poking holes in every wire with no avail...I cant seem to find a wire that's hot all the time...I know I can run one clear up to the battery direct, but was hoping to find one closer...does the lic plate light stay hot all the time?

No, but there should be one spot on the seven pin connector for the trailer wiring, that is hot all the time.

Make sure you’re testing it to a known good ground.

Nope, the trailer battery charge wire is only hot when the key is on.

Maybe not getting a good ground, check the tester at the battery, if good , use twenty feet of wire attached to the ground post of the battery on one end and the other end attached to the tester, to eliminate the chance of a bad ground for testing.

I recommend putting a dab of silicone sealer on those holes because corrosion will eventually set in.

I was looking when I did my bedlights, but gave up pretty quick. It took less time to run a new wire from the battery and down the frame, then to start testing wires everywhere.

I recently added a fuse box and breaker so now it's a bit cleaner under the hood.

Yup actually very few wires are constant hot past the main wire to the main and secondary fuse boxes, then its all relayed switched.

Run a wire PROPERLY from the battery along the frame rail to the back of the truck (fused right off the battery and shielded and insulated from the frame / metal)

Hi, I'd like to run a wire as well but have been pondering the best way to hook to the battery. I'm looking for a nice reliable way to connect without being sloppy and possibly cause amp draw/starting problems with the altered connection at the main bat term. Sticking the wire under the Battery terminal, using an alligator clip, or an el cheepo under the bat term ring is just not going to happen.

I Think I should just attach a wire to the hot connector post in the under hood fuse box with a suitable fuse close by then run the wire inside the frame to the rear bumper (Where I want the power) ?? Other Suggestions??

Before I added my fuse block, I had my wire with a ring terminal attached to the bolt on the hot lead from the battery post. There is a good bolt there and other connections are already there.

With my fuse block it's the same principle but just a larger wire to the breaker and then block .

There is a good thread on adding aux fuse blocks.

    EDIT

Eventually I'll clean up the wiring a bit more with a terminal like this.
