Reno from Google earth looks cool, on the border of mountains and desert.

I’m a wedding photographer so I’m thinking Lake Tahoe is a popular wedding destination. Do people kite surf on Lake Tahoe?

Is Sacramento the nearest international airport for direct flights to LHR?

East side of the cascades is much dryer than the west side. Bend is pretty cool and much drier.

    Two questions:

    Do you have to work?

    How limited is your budget?

I am leaving California (Sacramento area) because our family cannot go outside because of the air quality, I have two young kids who need to be able to play outside. We are moving to the Florida panhandle.

Been there with pollution, 2 years ago for 4-5 months Kilauea volcano was throwing out so much pollution, here n Kona you couldn’t see more than a mile some days..

I’m a self employed photographer, weddings, couples, people in love... so I can make a living in most places as long as there is enough of a population within an hour drive, or a tourist destination.

Budget, not unlimited for sure but we are wanting to buy. Currently in Hawaii, Big island, and there are no houses under $500k on the west side. Also no work, done 2 jobs since March.

You’re not joking about wet/dry side. I knew it was like hat as you exit Seattle and head to Spokane but didn’t realise it’s just as apparent down further south. From Google earth it shows it really well!

Rain shadow. All the moisture gets squeezed out of the clouds as they get pushed up the mountains. Dumps it all on the west slope and nice and dry on the east.

After reading the read and gathering you want little rain, varied outdoor opportunities, scenic areas/people for photography business, may have some love for the beach? I would recommend the CA Central oast. https://www.chrisburkard.com/search#q=central+coast. Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo are near the beach but also near mountains. The people are kinda pretentious gatekeepers in my experience in Santa Cruz and SLO (lived in SC for two summers, lots of family in SLO) but the location is prime when it comes to the outdoors and way less people than SF/LA. If you're looking for a more conservative/suburban area just move inland like Atascadero => Paso Robles => Fresno. The further inland you go the closer you'll get to the High Sierras which is an insane area for 4x4, big trees, camping, and remote lakes. However the cities themselves become less cool as most of the people are highly focused on provided for family and the core family unit. It also gets way fucking hotter and way worse air quality the more you move inland. A lot of people I know are moving to Colorado from CA though. I've lived all over CA and think CO is very nice but i do like surfing quite a bit.

Thanks for your input, I truly appreciate everyone’s efforts...

lots of new places I’m Googling.

I definitely love the beach/ocean but we did spend 3+ years 8,500ft up near Estes Park in CO, I was surprised how much the mountains grew on me considering I’d previously never lived more than 3 miles from a beach. We did however move from CO to Hawaii...

I like the idea of a beach being within driving distance I won’t lie.

I loaded a pod up and had them pick it up and drop it off at my house. Cost like 6g for a 16x8x8 container and we stored it for 3 months at their facility while we finished our real estate trans action. Shipping two vehicles was $944 each picked up in Seattle and drove them down to Portland.
