18 Cement TRD Off Road Long Bed

Visors, Roof rack, decals in and out, bug deflector, tonneau cover, bed extender

So my father has a 15 Tacoma access cab. Just before winter he bought it and we put a tonneau cover on his truck. The cover fits great except one thing.... It doesnt touch the tailgate.
He bought the truck used from a toyota dealer and it has factory snap on rails that stick up about 3/4 of an inch or so higher than the tailgate trim. Any ideas how to fix this? He tried removing the bed rails but that left tons of square holes for the rails to snap into. so that didnt help.
My input was of no use to him as I have a 16 Tacoma access cab.
