I've read a lot of threads on suspension upgrades for the past 2+ years but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Getting close and I'm thinking the answer is 5100s with new springs, but just in case it isn't the right answer I'm open to suggestions.

Basically, my stock TRD OR has 50K miles and the stock shocks have been fine, but not great. I get a lot road feedback, lean in corners, potholes (when I forget to miss them) are brutal as are speed bumps.

What I'd like is a better on road ride (I know it's a truck - doesn't mean you can't have both). I don't know if that means more squishy or more stiff or what. I also don't want it to be worse off-road. It's okay now for what I do but then I don't know what great would be/feel like.

I'd also like just a bit more ride height. No more than 2" in front and I want my rake back and a bit more load hauling capability. I have a camper shell and I'm probably level now and with any more weight back there I'm sagging.

So, 5100s with new coils in front (885?) and new leaf pack in rear (dakar medium 300-600 lb constant)? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks.

Pic for the hell of it.

Another in your shoes here. I’ve been thinking of the 6112/5160 combo but haven’t decided on the rear spring yet. Looking for 1-2” lift on either 255/85, or 265/75. I still have another year or two to decide. In that time I’ll either commit to a travel trailer or not, and that will determine some of my requirements.

5100’s 4th setting. 1.5” front lift factory coils. 1.5”rear lift. Maintained factory rake. Ride is great. Imo great lift for the price. Camping and light off-roading etc. Good luck. 6112 are a sick set up as well
    Good luck

So factory coils work with the lift? I thought they might have too much preload and then you lose travel.

You kept stock leaf springs as well? What happens if you have a bunch of weight back there?

Yea, how'd you lift the rear? My understanding is that the rear has to have the 5100s set at the lowest setting and AAL, new leaf pack or blocks required to lift the rear. I want to do a 1" to 1.5" lift at some point but not more than that.

Sounds like you are in the exact same boat as me, but with more miles. I'm starting to research new suspension, but only want 1-2 inches of lift. Also have a shell. I did just install sumo springs on the back to help with the sagging when I load up with camping gear and bikes, they definitely helped, but the rear ride is pretty stiff now.

I'm leaning towards the 6112/5160 combo, with probably some sort of a 3-leaf add-a-leaf in the back. BUT, I'd be curious to hear if anybody has any opinions on the 3-leaf vs. Dakar medium duty leaf packs. I'll be monitoring this thread :D

4th setting is fine for factory coils.I did not max out preload. Ride is nice. Imo. Rear 1.5” aal is great maintains factory rake. Or you can get a leaf pack. What ever you guys go with will be great. My ride is perfect with factory coils. I’ve also seen a thread on here that Bilsteins don’t warranty 5100’s with after market springs. 5100’s are direct replacement meant to be used with stock coils.

Sooner or later I knew someone was going to reference Monty Python. Personally, I'd have quit searching after stopping at the Castle Anthrax.

My dad really likes his with 5100’s with stock springs at the middle notch and it have him about 1.5-2 inch lift. He said the shop did some alignment but didn’t have to mess with an add a leaf.

Well, not sure I've found the holy grail, but I've pretty much decided to go with 5100s all around and a 3-leaf progressive AAL in the rear to prop up the sagging due to my camper shell.

A local shop quoted me about $1500 for everything including an alignment. I'm not interested in doing the work myself and the shop includes a 2 year warranty.

Apparently you are only supposed to use the OEM springs for 5100's. They would void the warranty.

I am using the OEM springs up front. Also using them in the rear but with an AAL. No way around that. The stock OEM springs in the rear are already being taxed by the camper shell and I need to lift it a bit to regain the factory rake and keep up with whatever happens up front. Thinking approx 1.5" in the front. I guess if that voids the warranty on the rear shocks oh well. They are pretty cheap anyway and I can see them lasting a reasonable time anyway.
