That is what I like about my Extang Trifecta 2.0. 2 star knobs to loosen and the cover comes off easy peasy. :) Instant full bed access.

Extang Trifecta 2.0. You can fold it up for space when needed. If you want to take the whole thing off, you can do so without tools and it’s light enough for one person to do so. Quality is great, about $400 or so.

Buddy. Do you research and think about it a hundred times so you don't make the same mistake that I made.

I ended up getting the Extang soft cover. It is well made and was super easy to install (bought it through the dealer for $600 or so). It is really great but ... It folds in thirds. I have the 5 foot bed so when it is in the closed position (you flip it forward twice and then buckle it) you lose about a third of your bed space. Granted it is not that big of a deal but it is a pain in the rear to reach things close to the cab.

For that amount of money I wish I would have got a soft topper. Better coverage and when not in use I could fold the thing all the way forward and have full bed access.

This is not a terrible solution at all, mind you. I am happy with the quality and the function (especially after having an open bed for years). I just wish I would have throught it through more carefully. I may sell it and go soft top / best top. But wanted to share that with you in case it helped with your decision.

I really really like the Toyota cover that came with mine as a factory option.

There have been a few others that have already mentioned the Lomax and I'm glad that's the one I decided on. After having it installed for a few months and paying more attention to other trucks driving around with soft roll-up covers, their's bouncing and flapping would drive me crazy. The one down side to the black aluminum is it does get hot as hell in the sun.

I definitely need to think it over. I don't think I want a topper. Not a hard one for sure. Not sure about a soft topper either. Want to mostly use the bed as a big trunk. Want something that's not hard to get out of the way to haul something tall. Either a hard or soft tri fold or a roll up.

My suggestion, if you do a folding one, make sure it can fold all the way up against the cab like the Bakflip MX4. A lot (like the factory one) you can't fold that final section so you lose the use of ~18" of an already short bed. I had a tri fold on my Raptor and hated everything about it. If I were to do one on my Tacoma, I would do a hard rollup like the Bak Revolver X4. You can roll it up and not lose hardly any bed space, when it is rolled up all the way you don't lose the visibility out your rear window, and it's hard so when it's down it's secure and won't flap. If you are sold on losing the use of the bed for anything taller than the rails, then just bite the bullet and get a DiamondBack.

I’ve had the Bakflip mx4 for 2 years and it’s just about the best tonneau IMO. Nice and sleek, folds all the way up and out of the way, and can be taken off in a couple minutes. If you end up looking for an mx4 I just took mine off to sell it. Decided I had more need for no over after all lol

I hear you. Drives me crazy when I guy something too quickly and then I second guess my decision. :)

I don't want a hard topper, either. I carry a bunch of stuff from time to time (seems like more than I ever planned) and need the height. I like the soft topper because if gives you a good cover but when you don't need it you can roll it forward and have full bed access. If you are using the bed as a big trunk, you probably don't need the soft topper. I am with you.

It seems the hard tonneaus that do fold all the way up (and don't block the bed) are expensive and they also block the rear window. Since I wanted something in a hurry I should have just bought something like this to serve its purpose until I was more sure of my strategy:

    https://gatorcovers.com/p/gator-srx...MImM_I9cb_6gIVEInICh37PwiEEAYYBCABEgLYKPD_BwE

I've seen roll up ones on Amazon for $125 ... might be worth check on on ...

Depends on how long you want to keep your vehicle as well OP.

Based on what you're looking for and possible ownership longevity, another Diamondback vote here. Though expensive, I don't intend on selling my truck and the cover will probably outlast it. Lockable, durable, weather sealed, and sexy.

Another vote for backflip mx4. I put one on my 2020 army green immediately on purchase and also installed a bed rug. I love that combination for hauling a lot of gear as opposed to dirt, gravel, etc. my Dad has the Toyota own hard cover but I like the bakflip better (flush fit and texture). I have been extremely happy with the bakflip. I use the closed tailgate to lock it and it is virtually leak proof (except maybe at the car wash). It also folds up completely very easily to haul y’all items. It does block the rear view mirror in this position but that hasn’t been a big deal to me.

Buddy bought a gator bed mat for a lot less than the factory one and it looks good. Got free shipping with it to.

You could haul your kayak on top of the cover without opening it. I believe the weight limit on mine is over 300lbs. So if your kayak is under that the Lomax can handle it.

Got my Taco last Tuesday and just ordered a Lomax from @GotExhaust and also got a factory bed mat as well.

And Clazzio seat covers, console and glovebox organizers, screen protector, Homelink mirror from Bob @RJP869, Subaru tweeter swap and Xpel PPF & Ceramic coat scheduled for Wednesday. All done before putting gas in her for the first time. :D

It's light. I can lift it over my head easy. Probably is about 50 pounds at most.

I just got my truck 2017 and already had undercover flex installed. I like it so far, does fold up and has struts to hold it up so it doesn't rest against back window but you do loose the visibility if that matters. I had access roll up cover on Silverado which was nice but parts wore out, broke, tore in spots.

For something that light, I have been looking at this Thule Goalpost. Might be worth a look. You can find them on CL / FB Marketplace for not a lot of money:
    https://www.rackwarehouse.com/thule-997-goalpost-hitch-canoe-kayak-carrier-rack.html

Just throwing out some ideas for quick and easy transport. I haven't bought anything yet. My next buy is the roof rack and I am frozen like a deer in the headlights on which one go get.
