Hey all! After a lot of research, headaches, and a recent success I thought I’d share some info with you. If you’re looking into aftermarket 16x8 wheels I can tell you that the American Racing Baja 172 wheels DO NOT clear the front breaks, however the Mickey Thompson Classic iii look very similar and DO fit just fine. The MTs are even hub centric (106.1mm) and do not require any kind of hub centric rings. Why this is so confusing is because they both share the same specs (0mm offset, 4.5 backspacing) so just reading from a website wont necessarily help. Some 16x8s can be hard to fit on the 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma’s due to those front calipers so if you were looking at classic style 16s the MTs, although a bit morepricey, will fit. The American Racing wheels will fit the 1st genTacos I believe.ADBD483B-97CD-4D2F-AA3A-B55628D0DF1F.jpg 696C98DD-C369-4D44-B0C4-04ECAF8FAFC5.jpg

Thanks for sharing! I just ran into this issue with Level 8 MK6 wheels. The bore was slightly too small to clear my hub and after discussing with TSW and Discount Tire, the consensus was the TRD OR models supposedly have a larger hub than standard Tacomas. I haven't found any information to confirm this, but I ended up exchanging the MK6 wheels for ATX AX202 wheels in the exact same spec (16x8 0mm offset, 4.5" backspacing) and they easily cleared the hub. The difference... MK6 wheels have a 106mm bore, and the AX202 wheels have a 106.25mm bore -- just enough space to clear the hub!

Happy to close out a very frustrating wheel purchase and very much appreciate the effort made by DTD and my local Discount Tire to resolve. In hindsight, I'm happy the MK6's didn't fit because I think these look WAY better.

Those look awesome! As far as I know all 3rd gen Tacoma’s have a 106.1mm hub but I could be wrong as I only researched my TRD OR. And I’m right there with you, I’m glad I had to get the Mickey Thompson’s because I’m a lot happier with them. Your truck is looking good!

I am currently in a jam. After some research I decided on matte black pro comp 7069 w/-12 offset wrapped with 265/75/16 Falken Wildpeaks from my local Discount Tire. Uge mistake this setup rubs like a mofo. I'm not sure if the tire are oversized for a 265/75 or if the negative offset rims or the combo is the culprit. I've trimmed most all the plastic however at wheel lock it rubs pretty bad in forward and reverse. I really F'ed up this purchase.

Hmm... I have 265/75/16 wildpeaks and put them BEFORE I lifted the truck. Never had any rubbing issues.

A buddy of mine has Method wheels in 16x8.5 with -12 offset and 4.5" backspacing on his 2012 with the exact same tires. No rubbing for him either. I've heard issues about Pro Comp wheels having inaccurate measurements, so perhaps that's your issue?

I just put out $1000 on rims and tires that I don't know what options I have with Discount Tire. I've had this set up for 2 weeks. I really don't have the time or money to order another set of wheels.

I’m running 265/75R16s fitted to Mickey Thompson Classic iii 16x8 0mm offset wheels. The suspension is stock on my 17 TRD OR and I have zero running. The -12 offset wheels will definitely cause rubbing without a substantial lift and even some trimming.

Depending on how bad the rubbing is and where, I know a lot of people have had good luck with a heat gun to mold the wheel well plastics where the tires rub and some moderate trimming where necessary. That’s the cheapest option I can think of. Or find someone selling their OEM wheels for a decent price. Sorry man I know how much that sucks once you’ve already invested the money!

Great post and helpful! If only I would have seen it before I bought the American Racing 172's about 6 weeks ago and put new snow tires on them. That was a huge headache trying to fix the caliper rubbing on wheel without buying spacers. I have since given up and now am trying to sell these rims and start over. Figure I will lose about $100 plus mounting and balance on the tires. I have learned that I have to be extremely careful buying aftermarket rims. I made the same mistake of buying a rim with the specs 0mm offset, 4.5 backspacing thinking it would fit as other report it does.

The thing that really gets me is that I sold my stock TRD off-road rims as soon as I bought the truck as I convinced myself I didn't need snow tires at the time. I wish I could have the $500 back for the rims instead of dealing with different lug nuts, aftermarket rims, hub rings, etc. Lesson learned.

Man I feel your pain, I sold my TRD Pro wheels when I got my aftermarkets and I regret it to this day. It's really discouraging when you invest time and money into wheels and you don't have much more of either to spend fixing the mistake. One good thing is people always seem to be selling their almost new stock wheels and tires for $500 ish. I bought a stock set as a backup and it was a good peace of mind investment. I hope you were able to get it sorted out brotha.
