But, but, but they have black wheels, big AT tires and stickers. Lots of stickers.

Yep. That $3K difference is the slideout. I also looked at the non-slideout, but I needed it for my mobile office. The dinette is much bigger and is a nice bed

I’d check our your local fb/craigslist for lightly used ones if you’re concerned about cost (if not ignore this)

I found a rugged rhino 6x8 from a company in Florida that manufactures them. Cost around 6k but it does what we need it to, plus it weighs about 900 pounds so towing with the taco is effortless. previous owner installed solar and I can run a generator on it, but it also has a marine battery installed for smaller items like charging your phone etc. Also bought a small ac hookup for the wife and kids. Fits a RV king which is awesome for a family.

Had a friend that read the obituaries daily and noted the addresses in good neighborhoods. A couple weeks later would start cruising the streets looking for interesting cars, boats, garage sales, etc.

Sometimes a knock on the door and a polite 'your boat/car/whatever looks like it's been unused for a while. Any interest in selling?'

Had a couple decent scores that way. Not as much to take advantage of someone, more to be first in line for something popular. Never hurt if the wife said 'sure, I always hated that thing!' :D

That right there is a priority feature, especially when combined with strong construction. You'll pay more, but have more reliability.

True - i guess thats another question for OP is really how rugged and offroad do you plan to take your trailer. With the wife and kids, we're hitting up state/national parks and overall pretty easy to drive places so while this trailer does have upgraded axle, i'm not really beating the shit out of it. I think some of the really upgraded/expensive trailers are designed to go through extreme terrain and if thats what they are looking for you might consider that route

I looked at a couple of their trailers at a show awhile back... the quality really didn't seem that much better than other main stream brands. And their popups... wow... they looked complicated to put up take down without multiple people. I watched the guy at the booth trying to fold one up and it was pretty sad watching him. And i'm talking about the extended awning area/outdoor kitchen and tent, not necessarily the normal popup part. But either way, neither seemed worth the premium price to me.

Indeed. Thanks, it has been a long time dream and after the child tent camping still has its place and desire...just not all the time, especially with cougars, elk and bears

The Hiker trailer checked all the boxes for us. We absolutely love how versatile it is. I was luckily able to find a very lightly used one.

Oof that’s pretty rough on the Taxa quality especially considering the cost of those things. Sad too because I really like the Mantis!

I’ve literally only owned an RV for 24 hours at this point but my only advice is to figure out what your going to use it for and start from there. A family of four with little kids and always at campground with hookups for a long weekend has significantly different needs than a solo hunting camper or a long term travel RV’er.

We (a family of four with a 2yo and 4yo) wanted something smaller to tow and store, but with room for both kids to have a (shared) bunk and my wife and I to have our own bed, heat, and not be completely removed from the outdoors. We like tent camping, but not sleeping on the ground. We don’t plan to use the toilet in it, instead preferring campgrounds with bathrooms or a honey bucket vs dealing with black water tanks. We went with a pop-up and hoping to use it 5-6 times this summer. We almost went with a Jayco 184BS but it would be a tight fit in our driveway.

My dad has been living out of a little guy wide 5 rough rider teardrop pulled behind his 2 door JK for 6+ months out of the year for the last 3 years. He’s happy as can be with it. Has a twin mattress inside with boxes for his clothes, cooks out of the kitchen or eats out, sticks to BLM campgrounds, national parks, and KOA’s as base camps to explore new areas.

Our friends with two older kids have tried other smaller campers but love their 5th wheel “Cabin on wheels”.

If you want to get ideas, look at the truck camping photo thread. It contains just about any type of camping you'd want to do. At last count, there were 268 pages, so if you want to find a particular brand or model, do a search within the thread.

Here's a good buying guide for off-road trailers.

i have the escape version of this trailer and love it. The only difference in ours is instead of a half tub like this one we have a full shower room.

I was gonna say we paid right at 17 for ours new and the non slide out was a little cheaper. The slide out though is worth every freakin penny. So much more room once that’s open.
