It's really not bad in my experience

Sorry, I'm not sure how to reply. I don't know what you mean by "my Scout" or "heading to the Outer Banks", but I do think that if you have never used your 2 tractions boards that buying 2 more is not the best ROI.

In any case, I have too thought about the flexibility of a winch that could be attached to both the front and rear and kept in the garage when not in use. However, I came to the conclusion that it is impractical, because of the effort and cost involved and because of the 3 times I needed a rescue during the time I've been seriously considering the idea, I've needed a rescue 3 times and only one of those times would a winch of my own helped.

Not having used traction boards means I have used other means to get unstuck. Questioning the best practice to insure the ability to get out of any situation I or others may be in since I am usually alone when I am in the backcountry in my Scout (Camper) and since the Outer Banks (Geographic location) is a large sandbar I am questioning whether 4 boards are better than two in the sand since Ryan has experience with this. Better to be prepared (Six P's) than walking for hours to maybe or maybe not get a hand.

Because you have used the word "backcountry" at least twice, I am guessing you are out west. If so, I can't really comment on safety and survival concerns, because I'm in the midwest and never more than a few miles from a road when in my truck. Canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is the most remote place I have been and a person can't bring a truck there.

I'm linking this so as to not appear hypocritical for calling you out for assuming I know the names of your local hangouts.

Having used my traction boards several times, I can say they are very situational. Sometimes they help and other times they shoot out the back and get lost in piles of mud and/or snow. I've never needed them on sand. The sand out here is usually easy to stay on top of. I do think practice with them helps.

    Doesn't 'look' difficult.
Should be able to pop the hood and it's right there.

The Outer Banks isn’t really a local hangout any more than saying Long Island is in my opinion
It’s a well known area stretching the entire coast of North Carolina. Using OBX would be like you using BWCA, which many people would know, but not everyone

Had one similar where a grassy field turned to swampy marshland.
The earth opened up and tried to swallow me whole....
No trees around or anything to hook on to, for that matter.
Front d.s. lca was hooked on an ice block. Front tire wasn't touching ground.
Had to call a coworker to tug me out. 20240406_184541.jpg
Left it overnight, then it rained.
By the next day water was up to the door. :D

Ok. So you are on the east coast, not out west. The Outer Banks strikes me more as the beach than the backcountry, but looks like a fun place to visit.

I thought of doing that also but decided to just get a good hoop bumper with hidden winch and a hand winch from harbor freight for emergencies, such as when the front winch stops working for whatever reason, or if I'm face-in to a problem and need to pull from the rear.
