    Hello,
Looking for some recommendations. I have a 2022 Tacoma Limited Double Cab with UnderCover Ultra Flex tri fold tonneau cover. looking to add a tent rack without removing the cover. Is there an option or do I go for a roof rack instead?

    Welcome!

I think you will have a hard time finding any racks that will allow the hard cover to fold at all. Maybe lift the rear section a little, but that's it. I had a roll top cover, and could not find hardly any that worked with my style. In my research for a rack to work with a cover, I found that you will need to do some cutting to the mounting of the cover, and then a bunch of foam taping to weather proof it. None of them are a made to work together, unless you have a diamond back cover with integrated rack rails. And then the diamond back can not fold at all.

I went with a Prinsu cab rack first, for my tent. One thing I really liked, was if I used the Annex, I could use the rear seats for luggage and access them through the annex. But gas mileage takes a big hit with a giant brick up top.

I then went to a soft topper with a rack. I like the weight further back than on the roof, but lost sheltered access to luggage storage in the back seat. I should be able to roll up one side of the soft topper and access the bed of the truck from the annex if I wanted. Gas mileage still takes a hit since I have a full height rack. I liked the cover when I had it. But the combo of the soft-topper and rack, for what I use it for, is the best of all.

    Hello Shawn,

Yea Decisions, decision. Is the Prinsu a low profile rack? Also does it comes with LED light bar? I found some roof rack made by Cali Raised that i like and from the dealer. I like the Ironman hardshell 1300 tent. Easy setup and low profile.

    Hey Mac,

On the Billie bar, can you still fold your tonneau cover? I have a tri-fold hard cover. Thank you!

No nothing you get will allow you to fold. You'll need a different cover to achieve that. Slide covers will work upgrade

There is some sort of relationship between Prinsu, Cali Raised (Offroad) and Cali Raised LED. Three different companies I think. I know I bought my Prinsu through Cali Raised Offroad a couple years ago. It is a low profile rack, and you can get a fairing cut for a light bar. I have a cheapy off Amazon that works fine. In my opinion, the rack mounted light bar is only good for looks. With it on, you get a ton of glare off the hood. And any dust or snow reflects far more light that high up. The first two pics are the tent mounted to the cab. The last one is how I currently have it on the bed rack.

The angle does not allow you to fold a tri-fold cover across a bed rack. Might be able to get creative with a cover that rolls up.

Personally I think it’s a solid trade off retaining the security of a hard tri-fold with bed rack on top. Get some bins that slide for the bed.

IF you can find a local welder - custom-made may work. KB Voodoo mounting brackets + MY homemade rack. AND, I am NOT a welder!!! First time using a MIG welder, which I have since given to my son!!!!

Total investment was $300+ several years ago. Not sure what local steel prices are where you live.Screenshot_20230320-144148.jpg Screenshot_20230320-144351.jpg Screenshot_20230320-144450.jpg Screenshot_20230320-144329.jpg

The height of the vertical pieces can be lengthened to meet your needs.....I tried to follow the basic shape of the cab outline (from the rear) and I have a canister tonneau, so height wasn't an issue for me.

If you own a T Slot tonneau cover Leitner Designs has a rail system that will work with their ACS Forged rack. It is a full height rack so that may be a no-go for you but the rack has the highest load capacity (static and dynamic load) of anything out there. I have an ACS Forged rack, stiffeners, gear pods and a decked system so I never went for the tonneau. Quality gear.

Bought it on eBay after I got the truck (used). The truck is just an SR5, but I couldn't find just an SR5 decal. IF I ever sell it, the decals will be removed so there is no "false advertising".

    Technically:
    it IS an SR5
    it IS a 4X4
    it DOES go offroad

Do you by chance have a long bed? I use this simple setup for mine. It’s a Diamondback HD cover and I throw a 2-man bivvy tent on top that I tie down to the bed cleats. Setup is usually 5 mins, 10 if I already started drinking before setting up camp haha. The tent is nearly the same footprint as the bed cover and it’s easy on and easy off so no worries about not being able to still open my cover later.

Yep, it was like 100 bucks. It got an internal frame and you just unbuckle 2x clips and it folds out, no additional assembly required. Fold it in half twice and buckle the clips and it’s completely packed. Super easy, I just throw it in my truck when I’m headed out to camp. Folds down to about an 24” circle.

EDIT: Everyone seems obsessed with the RTT option but I always thought it was a really expensive way to do the exact same thing I did for 100 bucks (minus the cost Diamondback cover). No bed rack needed (I’d argue almost no one needs a bed rack to accomplish the same “overlanding” goals most people can accomplish with just throwing things in the bed, but I know they look cool and I think that’s what most people are after…but to each their own).
