    Hello,
I am new to this forum. I've been reading a ton of threads and getting a lot of good info, but could really use your input. I'm ready to purchase a 2014 Taco DC 4x4. Still not sure if I want the SR5, TRD Sport, or TRD Off Road and which bed length. I know there are a lot of threads on this (I apologize) but I’m having a hard time making a decision. I think the main issues for me is do I need the rear locking differential and can I get by with the DC TRD Off Road short bed. Here is a list of what I'm looking for in a truck.
-Fit family of 4 (kids are 6 and 4) for camping and ski trips to Sierras (will see heavy snow), will upgrade tires and use chains when needed
-Will take it on dirt roads in search of remote camping spots, mostly Sierras (foresee mud/sand, light river crossings, uneven terrain with small bolders/rocks)
-I like idea of sleeping on a raised platform in the shell/cap of a DCLB (DC TRD Off-Road is too small, I'm 5' 1") and storing stuff on top with Thule racks/box
-Would consider RTT but need room for 8' surfboard
-May take on beach to camp

Not a fan of the scoop but could swap a standard hood onto it. Prefer the seats on the TRD but could get by on the seats of the SR5. Could care less about color matched bumpers etc. Really want a reliable 4x4 taco to take on adventures. I may get into heavier off roading later but mostly want help in heavy snow/ice and on back road camping adventures. Don't plan on desert racing or climbing steep rocky terrain with possibility of roll-over. Hope this paints a clear picture. Thank you.

Considering you don't like the scoop, could care less about color matched bumpers, and like the TRD seats, why not get the TRD OR? You'll have the locker from the factory which, based on what you say you are going to do with the truck, seems like it would be a nice security to have. Now if you want a long bed, then I would say sport.

    Stock for now
Well it sounds like you would want the DC LB TRD Sport for the sleeping platform & the seats. Swapping the hood out is easy since people always want the skewp ... and you'll be replacing the tires to something more useful on the trails vs the stock tires.....

You only other option if you want the sleeping platform is a DC SR5 LB but you'll not get the seats.

I had a 2006 SR5 DC SB & now 13 TRD OR DC. The SB works for me due to my truck use in very tight, heavily forested trail heads. I loved my SR5 but really am happy with the OR.

Good luck with whatever you decide...welcome to TW

Thank you for your inputs! Leaning towards the DC OR. Can buy good tents and cots and sleep fine. Not a fan of the RTT's. Just hope the SB is big enough for all of our camping needs. Now I need to get a good price!!
