Looking to buy and need advice

Hey all

I am looking to buy a new/used vehicle and am trying to decide between a 4 cyl and 6cyl. I will be using it for the city driving and bringing me out to trailheads so I can do hiking/backpacking. I also plan to build myself a sleeping platform in the back so that I can live out of it. Sorry, if there are already threads on this question, but I have spent the past week searching on here and havent seen a great response for it. Can the 4cyl handle most offroading to get me to the trails?
