hey all. As the title implies, I'm new to on-line forums. I've got a 96tacoma 4x4 ext. cab, and there are a couple of things I'd like to do to it. One is change gear ratio as it is too high geared and two, unrelated to actually doing something to the truck, I would like to find a web sight that actually has the correct parts for my vehicle. Looking forward to whatever responses come my way

Great. It might take me a bit to get the hang of all this.

Check out Marlin Crawler for gears, WheelersOffroad for suspension and the vendors section of the forum for body parts. If all the money that I've dumped into my truck I could have bought a pretty sweet newer car....

Stop now. Don't spend any money on anything. Just save it until you can afford to do a Long Travel suspension or a SAS...or buy another rig that is already modified with a ton of shit. Because either way you will end up in one of these three places with your own rig...but with an empty wallet lol.

Wish somebody would have told me this many years ago :D

Lol...no kidding. I bought my truck to get to more difficult trail heads, hauling scuba gear and now 4 years later I just finished building my THIRD sleeping platform.

Haha, I feel our pain man.

It never ends with these hobbies. But a lot of pain can be avoided by having the right information before one starts dumping money on stuff.

I have no regrets though. It is awesome to play with these toys.

Yup totally agree. I was joking with my latest platform....if I make three more versions I'll be able to sell them!

I've had fun doing each upgrade and I've learned a lot. My next thing is I'm going to redo my wiring. I've done a lot of research and have almost all the parts.

I'm planning on keeping my truck for many many years. I don't daily drive it so it should last until about 2032 or so. I gotta make sure all the stuff I do to is super solid. So I take my time.

Iceland, where we don't need our axles to articulate but we need to be able to float on snow and snow covered glaciers. :D

Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. Actually Iceland is somewhat 'green'. It's Greenland that is quite the snow/ice spectacle. Go figure o_O

I think he was referring to Iceland because it's where these trucks are built. I noticed the irony when I was reading "Collapse" by Jared Diamond about civilizations on Greenland though. Someone should have taken a better look at these places before naming them.

As far as being geared too high, so you mean rpm's are running too high on the freeway? I'd just get bigger tires and think of all that money that I'm saving on regearing twice - once now for smaller tires and again when you decide to go back up in size lol.

Seriously though an inch or two in tire height might be the ticket unless you are set on the size of your tires and / or want to install lockers at the same time. Any money in gas savings regearing to a lower final ratio would be offset by the cost of regearing for a long time.
