Thanks for accepting me into the forum. I need opinions and feedback, I’m looking at buying an older used Tacoma, I’m looking at 2006 Tacoma 4x4 v6 with 170k miles asking price is $12,995. To me for the age and miles that seems crazy, but Tacoma’s resale value is wild right now, also found a 2010 with 195k for $15k, I can’t find anything else in my price range. I don’t drive much, 5 miles if that a day to work, a random 20-30 mile trip a month or so. I’m just curious if those prices are fair and on par with the years and mileage? Both trucks are negotiable also. Everything newer is dang near $20k with 120-170k miles. Thanks guys

From what I’ve seen these trucks still command strong resale values. All you can do is be persistent and constantly check. Jump on anything that looks good asap. It can be a real pain though. Also, dependant on where you live is watching out for bad, rusty frames.

I didn’t want a brand new 3rd gen. The friggin 2nd gens I was looking at were almost as expensive as a new truck!

Bit the bullet and purchase a brand new 2020. Looking back glad we did.

all you can do is keep looking to stay in your price range. High interest rates hasn’t seemed to have an effect on older Tacomas yet from what I’m seeing.

    Oh and Welcome!

I wish I had the money for a new one! lol. I can only afford the older ones just because they are so expensive. I live in Ohio and most of the Tacoma’s I’ve seen are very nice and frames are solid. The two I’m interested in have had the frames replaced dude to that recall and both are undercoated. I’m checking every hour it seems like! So far after about 2 weeks of looking, these are the best ones I have found. Now, I haven’t test drove either one yet, I’m just not used to the age, price, and mileage. I remember years ago, a vehicle with more than 130k, is done and junk. Now that’s the new normal miles seems like. Both trucks are the full 4 doors also. Thanks for the feedback! I do know these trucks run forever! Btw Layne Staley was amazing

I’d shy away from the 2006. The early 2006 models had head gasket issues.

I love my 2010, only has 136,000 miles, as I retired in 2020 and not any Baja trips with it since 2018.
I also had a 2005 and a 2001. 2005 had a few issues. They all were 4x4 Off Road TRDs.

Agreed! That voice, oh that golden voice! Still get shivers down my spine all these years later. Gone way too soon.

The 2005 had bad ABS brakes, and the clock spring in the steering column failed. Dealer wouldn't fix under warranty. Still it was high value to trade in for the 2010 which has been wonderful.

would? Gets me every time. I’m too young to see them in their prime, but man what a time that would have been. Honestly, they are still making great music. Just not the same

    Avoid 2005-2006
The 2012 V6 engine can have secondary air injection issues.
There isn’t a “fix” for it. As the ECM was changed in 2013 to fix the issue.
It’s not a huge deal on the 2012. But it can be an expensive repair. Unless you bypass the SAIS.
But it won’t pass state inspection if you do that.

The 2007-2008 truck were super simple. But lack VSC and ATRAC for the 4WD trucks.
Actually, VSC was offered as an option in 2005-2008 but it is rare to see it on one.
The off-road trucks had a fully open differential. They just spin wheels unless you are in 4WD in slick conditions.

2009-2011 are good trucks. They don’t have the SAIS so no chance of failure there.
The use Auto-LSD. They don’t suck in 2WD.
2013-2015 are the best of the best. All the features and kinks were worked out by then.

    Ok awesome thanks so much! I’m looking at a 2010, and a few 2013’s. I’ll pass up on the 05 & 06 I found!

Both of those years are good.
Just check the inside frame rails next to the converters, and the frame over the muffler on the passenger side.
Those are the places that rust out first and are easy to miss.

I’d spend a $100-$200 for an inspection at a shop before buying.
    It’s well worth the money.

ABS was bad up to 2008.
Not a parts failure bad, but the system over all just didn’t seem to function right.
When the Auto-LSD was added in 2009, things seemed to improve.

Ok, I will do that. According to the owners of those trucks I’m looking at, the frame has been replaced on them due to the recall. But I’ll double check to make sure. Is there a way to make sure the frame was actually replaced besides it looking newer? Haha. Should I be concerned about mileage? 197k, 158k, 161k

Sorry, I just wanna make sure it’s reliable, I’m getting a loan through my credit union and wanna make sure it’s worth it. I’m currently driving a 2011 jeep liberty with 158k and it’s free haha but I really been wanting to a Tacoma. Was approved for $17k, but didn’t really wanna go that high, frankly, most tacomas in that price range have 160k miles on them as well.
