Just remember to get a heavy duty transmission cooler and a heavy duty oil cooler that will help out alot.

Edit you should run over to some of the Gm and ford forums and just see what kind of problems they are having.

Possibly... once a month but what kind of distance? Also, I see you're in CO, are you towing through the mountains? If so, the turbo diesel will shine vs a gas powered V8. The diesel will also outlast a gas engine so although they're more expensive to purchase, they have a much longer life to pay you back. Diesels aren't for everyone, good luck with your decision!

If you're set on a gas powered 1/2 ton, the new F-150 or the Silverado get my vote. The Tundra is nice and beastly but it's also a gas hog. Titans have a small rear end (unless they upsized in the last couple years) and it was cautioned for heavy duty use. I haven't heard of any giving out personally but I'd rather have a larger rear end for towing.

x2 on the diesel, but if you really wanna stay away from them i would go with the f150 ecoboost. the ecoboost has a lot of same characteristics of a diesel just in a smaller package

I've put many many miles on a Dodge 2500 w/ the smaller diesel motor, although not for much towing.
Very comfortable interior, had little maint. issues, but rode stiff as hell.

my father and i bought a 95 diesel suburban 4 years ago for $1800 and have put over 150,000miles on with absolutely nothing other than general maintenance.

I have also had several silveradoes with no issues

we had a ford that was a total money pit for gas and stupid little things always breaking and a dodge with tranny and electrical issues

Ive always had luck with chevy and yota.

I say like a 2006 or earlier dodge ram diesel so you get the better 5.9 cummins which is good on gas. Or go with the ford ecoboost.

Buy a Cummins. Call it a day. Out of all the diesels I've driven (And I've driven a lot of them) the 5.9 and the 6.7 are monsters. The new Duramax and Powerstroke are good too, but I've heard rumblings from the other crews regarding them.

Otherwise if you can find an older Ford with the 7.3L Powerstroke, snap that puppy up.

Stay the sweet fuck away from the 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstrokes. They're complete garbage and don't deserve to be called diesels.

There's a reason pretty much every fire department has Cummins. They last, and their bullet proof. Their straight 6 will never be beaten.

Case in point. 6.7L straight for how many years? Chev and Ford come out with brand new redesigned motors with even more HP and Torque. Cummins says, fuck you, makes a new transmission with the existing 6.7L and beats out both of them with 800ft/lbs.

cummins are amazing but the dondge tranny behind it will strand you.

Cummins hooked to a stick shift (or an allison) is the real way to go

Never had an issue with their trannies in the past 4 years of driving them.

I might have just been lucky though.

I haven't heard good things about the new dodge diesels, like in the last couple years. A few guys I work with have them and they have spent a lot of time in the shop. It was the first bad thing I've ever heard about the dodge in-line 6 cylinder diesel. The old ones are tanks and very tough to kill but I've heard mixed reviews on the new ones.

The duramax stock is a little eh, but it's a new animal with the Bully Dog chip. It runs much smoother and gets better fuel economy (plus on extreme mode it's got more power than you know what to do with :)).

Then OP should get himself a 5.9L and call it a day.

One of the guys put up a Dodge diesel for sale. This was his pitch.

If you are looking for towing capacity and bed space, I would go with a new generation tundra. Its a yota, it has a big V8 and you can get an 8ft bed if you get the extended cab

I've got an 03 F250 with the V10 gasser in it with the 6spd manual. I towed a 30'tt with a slide out, heavy duty cap ,full of tools for 190000 miles and the thing is a beast. Uses no oil, runs like new with normal maintenance.

Why would you ever want that vs a diesel? That's horrible!

I would probably look at the new F-150's with either the 5.0 or 3.5EB, or a 5.7 Tundra as a second choice. Titans are pushing on 10 years and need a redesign imo, also I hear they are horrible on gas. I personally don't like Chevy/GMC styling and especially the interior looks cheap to me, but the ones I drive at work were reliable so far although those are all HD's. 03 2500HD 4x4, 00 2500 2wd. 02 2500 4x4 and 08 2500HD 4x4 Duramax.

I second the Duramax with Allison tranny! Best towing truck out their IMO. Its the only GM product I would ever consider buying.
