You should be fine with the factory cooler as long as you don't tow in 5th.

As for adding leaves, that will screw up your unloaded ride. I'd suggest air bags which you can inflate when you need them. Much easier to install too. I did this on my 2014 Tacoma.

Should I go back and ask for a reweight or just assume the extra 300-400lbs?

Which air bags did you purchase?

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
The reason you don't tow in D on an auto trans is that the truck will always be trying to upshift into overdrive, then downshift back to 4,3,etc whenever you so much as breathe on the gas pedal. It's really hard on the trans pulling that weight in OD, but more importantly the constant gear hunting is what really wears on the trans and fluid. Every gear change involves clutches disengaging/slipping/reengaging, torque converter unlocking/locking, etc. All that mechanical and fluid friction puts a lot of heat into the fluid and parts, degrading and shearing the ATF to the point where it no longer does its job well and parts start failing. That's why it's better to lock out OD altogether and let it sit in 4th at most. Of course while keeping an eye on trans fluid temps

As for manual trans, it's a little more subjective but same concept, except you dictate every shift. If I'm on long level/downhill road and not dealing with a super draggy trailer I'll occasionally drop it into 5th, provided it's taking very little power to maintain speed. Otherwise putting lots of engine torque through overdrive gears is laying a beating on both the engine and drivetrain with lower RPMs of oil and coolant circulation. Still want to minimize shifting and clutch wear as much as practical with the extra weight.

I went with AirLift, but if I were to do it over again, I think I'd go with Firestone.

Ever since re-reading that post I’ve towed only in 4.

Excellent explanation! Most other manufacturers utilize a "Tow / Haul" switch of some kind to accomplish this exact thing - which I think is a whole lot more intuitive than the system Toyota uses.

Update the towing... I installed a seconds tranny cooler and headed on the road trip. Average temps were around 155-175 at 55-60mph.
