Looking to increase a little MPG to the 4.0. Ideas?

So let’s you save 500 bucks a year in gas , coasting, timing lights, and any crazy ideas. That’s about 8 bucks a week, I betting most people piss $8 away on Starbucks or something else that don’t need and if $40 bucks a month makes that big a difference in your finances, you probably have bigger issues.

 

Accelerating from a full stop is where the most fuel per mile is burned. So, get out of town...

Seriously, my best MPG comes from highway driving. Weekend before last, 23MPG in the mountains. But, that's as much up as down. Big difference from normal: no stoplights.

 

This may be where some of the higher numbers are coming from. I live in flat country and tend to get about the expected fuel economy most of the time. Occasionally I’ll make a trip with some serious elevation change, and usually even if it’s up and down the whole way, one direction is mostly down and the other is mostly up. I have gotten some really high numbers in those circumstances, but I always disregarded them, and knew the opposite leg of the trip was or would soon be worse.

 

Not that the fuel mileage became incredibly great, but on my truck, removing the four catalytic converters and installing the applicable O2 sensor sims certainly helped. In fairness, DTLT headers and a URD Y pipe were installed at the same time.

 

Driving like a grandpa, smaller lighter tires and keeping weight down are the only things that I think will make a difference. Even then minor. I'd rather get there quick and enjoy the truck.

I do $800-$1000 a month. I can't imagine it being that low.

 

Those are all mods I'd like to do one day but the amount of money that all costs would offset the bad mileage for the life of the truck.

 

Is that what you spend per month? Thought i drove a lot.

 

Canadian sheckles, but yes. Sometimes up to 150km per day. Mind you.... Aluminum front bumper full skids and loaded with tools + heavy foot and no patience = lots o gas money.

 

How much is gas up there?

 

Average about $1.15 per litre where I'm at.

 

Got caught at 2 lights I usually make this morning. 24 even. Got to 24.2 for a lil bit but heres the full trip values. Snapped this as I was pulling into the parking lot.

 

id try and calculate the MPGs with the age old miles driven on ODO by how many gallons put in the tank, that tells u exactly how many miles u get on a gallon, not quite sure if u have a 13.3mpg reading then an avg. of 24 mpg seems like something isn't right with the way SCANGUAGE calculates mpgs. when u calculate the old way its how many miles u get on the amount of gas you've actually used no average, just reality.

then what am I doing wrong? I cant break barely 23 mpgs on a stock 4 cylinder with tiny stock tires and no added weight at all, its a daily driver. what the 4.0l v6 has cylinder deactivation or something

 

Time to buy a 2007 Double cab short bed v6!

I wasn’t calculating my mileage frequently back then, I just did it that time because my odometer had rolled over 400 miles and I was blown away. On average though I got around 20mpg back then and that was a good day for me.

The worst I can remember was a trip I took with my friends. Still stock (mostly), probably 800lbs+ of camping gear in the bed, 4 people in the cab, definitely hitting the max capacity of the truck, driving on a fast highway the whole way. When I filled up I averaged about 12.4mpg. To date I still think that was the worst tank I’ve ever had.

 

That 13.3 is the instant as I was goosing it into the lot. It showed 0 when I parked in the spot and was in park 12 seconds later. That small data point is irrelevant. The scanguage trip average is correct. When I do long freeway trips, I check it vs the mathematical average to see how close it is. It's within a negligible margin of error since it feeds off the same mileage data the odometer is using.

My point is that if you use some gas to get up to speed then just kinda slow roll into red lights and stay off the throttle, you can get crazy good mileage. It's essentially hypermiling 101.

If it makes you feel better, I regularly get like 15-16 on the freeway when I try to do 80. If I stay in the right lane doing 70, I can maybe hit 18. that 25 comes from commuting to work at 630 with almost no one on the road and mostly green lights.

Not to be pedantic, but that's literally how an average works. Some trips on the tank you might get 11 in rush hour and 20 on the freeway, but total miles/ total gal on a tank gives you average fuel consumption.

 

You already have a de facto cold air intake from the factory. Not many places on the truck cooler than the air rushing the fender area short of some sort of snorkel setup.

 

The best thing you can do for our trucks is to keep a stockish size tire thats light, and keep speed down. Run at 60mph, ill get 21+ mpg, 65 im down to 19-20, 70 im looking at 17-18, 75 16-17mpg.
