Hey guys I am a beginner at this and I am looking to lift my truck 3 or 4 inches and put some new rims and tires on it, something around 285/70/17 or 18s...not too sure. Mainly I would like to see some setups and descriptions of you lift amount and tire sizes if you don't mind posting some pics that would be great!

2.5-3 gets my vote but I might be biased...

3" unless you are cool with cutting your nice new truck.

2.5" on 275/70R17s for me. Good compromise on lift/Tire/MPG for me.

    I agree

    I got 2.5 inch or so with 275 70 17

Debated on 285 but couldn't justify going a 1/2 inch bigger for worse mpg and cutting my truck.

3" is the max height to lift Tacos if you want to stay free of headaches with problems associated with the lift, seems to be the case anyway.

I thought that for a 4x4 Tacoma, 3" is the maximum height lift before having to worry about "cutting" issues underneath and for a 2WD Tacoma, 4" is the maximum height lift. I know for sure this is the case for 2nd Gen Tacos.

Is that no longer valid for 3rd Gen Tacoma's?

3rd gens are actually 1" higher from the factory than 2nd gens so your getting a free 1" lift from Toyota so a 3" lift kit only nets you no more than 2"

That is correct, 3rd Gens are 1" higher than the 2nd Gens.

However, I'm still curious if the 4x4 = 3" and 4x2 = 4" still apply to 3rd Gens... I think the same does apply between both the 2nd and 3rd Gen, right?

If someone was wanting to look into the highest lift they could get without having to worry about replacing or cutting any parts, I'm sure they would still aim for the 4" lift if they have a 2WD. The same goes for a 3" lift if they have a 4x4.

I'm debating on doing mine 4-6, 4 at the least, going to do a legit lift, not blocks on the struts, Toyota is going to give me 20% off, will be factory installed, keep the warranty

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
It's actually even different on a 3rd gen, they come +1" over 2nd gen, so a 3" lift on a 3rd gen is actually the equivalent of the old headache'd 4" lift on a 2nd gen. The suspension is the same, otherwise... including poor down travel numbers with stock upper arms.

tl;dr OP is gonna end up with a truck that drives like shit unless he regularly takes sepia tone pics in an industrial area, then I guess it'll "look" cool.

What kit did you use? Just spacers on the struts?
