I honestly get the same mileage in the 3.5L twin turbo raptor as I do in my tacoma.

I'd rather have a taco in my garage, than an F150 in the dealerships garage.

This was an important deal breaker for me, when I bought it.

MPG? Are we on a Honda compact sedan forum?

I owned a 2013 raptor. It was like a 2 bedroom apartment on the inside. I miss that cavernous cabin; but that’s it. It wasn’t fast; my Z06 was fast. It was a pain in the ass to park in public lots and i had to vaseline the sides to jam it into my garage.

Big trucks are for people who need big trucks. I don’t, so i drive a taco

Just don't get upset if your new Tacoma, has problems,a lot of fluid seal leaks, and transmission problems on the newer Tacoma's.If you live in the rust belt,Tacoma's need yearly frame coatings.Tacoma's get bad gas mpg for the size of the truck.

I wouldnt switch. For one the size difference is substantial. The mpg, well its pretty marginal. Reliability is for sure in the Tacoma column. Tough call for sure. But I dont think I would be able to go from a full size to a midsize. Going from a tacoma to a f150, different beast and more easy to swallow.

Optics...reason to lift it a bit...the LB does tend to look better when lifted (I'm about to get flamed)...as for the move...do several more test drives...if you like the F150 the Taco is really different (I believe better of course) to drive...most love it, but some have stated vehemence. As a far as reliability...isn't it a shame you are worried about a 5 year old trucks reliability...look at the resale of 2015 Tacos.

they don’t. People just wanna complain because they didn’t do their due diligence and didn’t pay attention to the truck’s characteristics while on the test drive.

It’s a truck with “high” revving motor. Not a ton of torque. Meant for durability and MPG efficiency. Need to be revved to make power. Trans needs to shift to put it in its power band. Nothing wrong with it. It’s the way it was designed.

don’t like it, don’t buy it.

Because Toyota is so focused on making the customers happy, they came out with a revision (tuning) that helps alleviate some of the “complaints”.

I cant remember a user who works on them and he has replaced a few. Unfortunately all are in warranty so they arent opening them up and just putting new ones in.
Once warranty starts to go out on these it will be interesting to see what the failures are.

Some Toyota dealerships have a rental devision and they will rent you a newer Tacoma, give that a try.

    Also,
Try making a list of what you use your F-150 for; then see if the Tacoma will be a good fit.

for me the core of why I got my '17 Tacoma:
    It fits in the garage
I can haul what I plan on hauling
    It has 4 doors
    It will last
My wife got my '17 RAV4 (family car)

    Good luck with the purchase

I had a 2015 F150 with the 2.7L eco-burst. Had tons of power and could get 27 mpg in summer and 23 in winter. Obviously tons of room.

However the transmission was retarded. It didnt know when to shift or sometimes would grind gears and clunk. The truck did not instill confidence that would last long if not past the warranty.

Now I have a 2019 Tacoma. Much smaller, less power, worse gas mileage by a little bit. But I'm in love with the taco. Way more fun and engaging to drive (manual tranny), way more personality, more maneuverable, fits in the garage, and I can trust it. In addition, F150s are a dime a dozen. I literally see 50 of them every morning. Most days I dont see another taco.

    So I have both a 2018 F150 XL 4x4 and a 2017 Tacoma TRDOR 4x4. Some observations:
1- As you can see the F150 is MUCH bigger
2- F150 has the 5.0 v8, is stock, and has averaged about 16 mpgs over 25,xxx miles, Taco has 3" lift, 285/70/17s and has averaged 19mpgs over 5xxx miles (Ford is a work truck, Taco is the weekender)
3- Both are autos. Ford is a 10 speed, Taco is a 6 speed. I know this is not the prevailing opinion but I strongly prefer the Taco transmission. After all the complaints on TW I've tried to pay closer attention to the shifting or whatever and I just don't see where all the hate comes from. The Taco has smooth shifts that I don't even notice unless paying close attention. The Ford shift points aren't bad per say, but it's in 9th gear by the time it's reached 40 mph and its shakes violently at every stop light with the auto off/on feature I hate so much.
4- I also find the interior of the Taco to be much more appealing, but that is just my preference
5- Taco is a much, much more capable off roader, but that is partially due to mods. F150 has shit ground clearance and approach/departure angles though.
6- So far no real problems with either, and there are some things like towing , payload and interior/bed space that are clear wins for the F150. However I honestly look forward to cruising around in the Taco and I can't say I ever am enthusiastic about trips in the Ford.

I was shopping used f150 but got a used tacoma for some of the same reasons. If I could have afforded a newer lariat with a v8 that would have been my choice though.

Oh yeah it's smaller. Having spent 20 years in 1/2 and 3/4 tons the tacoma feels like a car.

I went from an OBS F250 7.3 to a 3rd gen Taco. No regrets - though I actually like the fact that it is and drives small (but retains most of the usual truck attributes). I cross-shopped a current gen F150 2.7 EB at the time. At least for my purposes, the only area the F150 felt like a better truck was the powertrain. Otherwise, it was just ... overkill. And even from the test drives, I didn't get a feeling of confidence that the thing wasn't going to start shedding random parts after five or six years.

Yup. I traded my 2016 Tacoma for a 2019 Tundra to pull a travel trailer. If we enjoy the RV, we'll probably sell it in 3-4 years and buy a motorhome. At that point I would probably sell the Tundra and go back to a mid size truck.

My suggestion? Go to Avis and rent a DC Tacoma for a few days before you pull the trigger.

My sons eco boost in his 2011 truck took a crap on him a little over 100K. Tossed a rod through the block. Second motor (used and $5000.00) started knocking around the same mileage. After 2 Toyota trucks before with zero problems he finally came back to Toyota
