Looking to purchase this 06, is the frame too rusty?

So I currently have an 02 Prerunner TRD Off Road w the V6, the frame is rotting and I’ve had it patched 6 times now so I’m looking to buy a 2nd gen for college. I found this one here in my price range it’s a 2006 with 165K on it for 13.5k, but knowing how my frame rusted so bad I wanted opinions before buying a second gen. I live in the metro detroit area so it’s a salt belt state for sure. Here are some photos of the rear leaf mounts.

It all depends on how many years you intend to drive it. Somebody is getting rid of that vehicle because it’s starting to get expensive to maintain. There banking on some uneducated buyer to step up and take on the expense. Are you that guy?

$13,500 for another truck with a frame that is already on it's way to being rotted out?

I would sooner take that money and look for a rust free truck from out of state, even if the mileage is higher. Your budget can get you into another 1st gen without a rotted frame from out of state.

Used Tacoma prices are pretty wild right now but there are still good deals out there. I would not spend that kind of money on another rust bucket though.

Don’t buy it. You will throw $12,000 away as you will ultimately scrap it out for parts.

Better to travel and buy rust free or buy one that has frame replacement.

That frame is toast, the 06's also having a ticking time bomb with a defective head gasket which is a $2500 repair if/when it goes.

Alright thanks guys! Seems like a hard pass from me then. Maybe I’ll try and look for something from out of state like some of you suggested. The search continues!

I had a Toyota Sequoia, same year, that looked very similar (S.W. Michigan). I found that doing any work on it was very difficult because of the rust. For instance, seeing that rear diff., trying to change the fluid could potentially cause serious issues. Anyhow, I sold that otherwise decent Sequoia for a quarter of this asking price. Hope this helps and good luck!

I did the "Go south and find a better one route" 2 weeks ago.

The great. I met a great guy looking to get rid of a very good 4X4 regular cab (base) 2.7 manual with 121,000 miles. 2012.
The great. The frame is pristine.
The great. This truck spent it's entire life south of the Mason Dixon line (TN and LA)
The great. The body and paint are beautiful.
The OK. Super White wouldn't have been my first choice.
The OK. 2" Lift kit (spacers) and bigger off road tires make the handling about what you would expect.
The OKish. CEL. The code seems to point to a rear O2 sensor failure, so I replaced it. Not sure if that fixed the CEL for good.

Oh...and the bad....I'm still waiting for his credit union to return the application for title to him so he can mail it to me. I do have proof he discharged the lien, a signed purchase contract, a signed odometer statement, and a signed bill of sale though....so it's not like I'm completely "out there" if the title doesn't show up in the next week or so.

    $14,000.

So...keep looking! Heck for the right vehicle, I'd get a plane ticket and go look at it. Maybe a pair, take a buddy and have an epic road trip home. Have some fun. Why not?

    Phil

I would not touch an 05-06,possible motor mount/headgasket issues, frame no longer under recall.
    O.P.go find yourself a 2010 on up.
