I've lived in Auburn for over 10 years now. I really like it here and if you have kids the school system is really good. I am thinking of changing jobs tho and looking into the Huntsville/Madison area. Visited my buddy there and really like the music scene and breweries popping up. Also a very good school system in Madison

ok, true. @camit34 Birmingham does suck but when myself , or anyone else talks about bham, were talking about the burbs. Bad traffic on 280. If you have kids any "over the mountain" area will be good. The suburbs south of bham actually have some good school systems.

Even living on 280 is not a problem if you are not trying to go to work at 8 or 9. If you get to the office at 7 or 7:30 and leave by 3:30, you're golden. I go from downtown to 280/459 (google map it) in like 15 minutes. If you try at 8am or 4:30pm, it would take a literal hour.

That said, all the positives far outweigh the "bad" of traffic. And that's not even "bad" traffic. Just busy because it's a bumping place.

All traffic in central Al is bad but tolerable. I'm 280 and 65 are some of the worst. Unless there is a wreck you will pretty much be fine.

@camit34 if you haven't been scared off by all the carrying on. There is alot of history here, and some trails to ride. Plus the beach is not far, and the smokey mountains are near by.

I didn't read everybody's comments, but I'm sure there is some drama as the Alabama group doesn't like to have actual discussion just arguments when they disagree with an opinion.

Couple of questions, what company are you with now? Is your desire to be closer to your family or just simply in the same state?

I have lived in both Birmingham and Huntsville (currently reside in Huntsville), so I am going to speak towards my own experiences...be prepared for Alabama group butthurt because of my opinions (it always happens).

If you like big city feel, you'll like Birmingham. They have a lot going on down there. For me, too many people in a small area. The surrounding communities have (I believe) the highest crime in the state, places like Tarrant. They have the most diversity I would argue in the areas in Birmingham like Mountain Brook being in like the top 5 wealthiest communities in the country, but right down the road hood-central. I'm not a huge fan of that. Traffic is an absolute nightmare. Locals will say "oh you have to leave at the right times yada yada", but with the amount of people that live there in that small of an area...traffic is ALWAYS bad. It may not be horrific at all times, but it's always bad. Used to take me 45 minutes to drive 8 miles to/from work when I lived there. Birmingham is close to an offroad area we call The Slab, you'll get tired of The Slab. It's also close to Choccolocco, great offroad park.

Now Huntsville, big city, big area, not as dense population. Literally you only see buildings taller than 3 stories in downtown. It has been built around Redstone Arsenal, a military base. Jobs GALORE. Negative for you is distance to your family. It is not close to Sylacauga. Huntsville has great smaller surrounding cities/communities like Arab, hazel Green, Toney, New Market, etc etc...if you don't like the big city (Huntsville doesn't feel like big city to me). If you live IN HUNTSVILLE, avoid the northern areas (North of I-565), that's the hood. Anything south you're pretty golden, or anything outside of Huntsville as mentioned before. Huntsville is in a triangle between Choccolocco, Stoney Lonesome, and AOP offroad parks. Equal to or less than 2 hours to drive to any of those. AOP and Chocco are our best 2 parks within proximity in my opinion, AOP is in Tennessee btw.

Again, the first couple questions are more important....do you want to be closer to your family and what company are you with? Others from the Alabama group live close/in Sylacauga area and can speak better to it.

We will welcome another member with open arms to our Alabama TW community, but be prepared to get a lot of shit and I hope you can dish it out, we are a bunch of assholes lol.

    Just remember scotty is dumb.

But I agree with his assessment. I lived in bham and huntsville. Jobs and location Huntsville is better in my opinion.
