Oh, and I see OP is in Colorado.....you are making a GIANT mistake moving to Alabama from there. You won't find anything as scenic, awe-inspiring, or weather as comfortable around here. Bring extra deodorant if you are the type that sweats.

you're right, but the guy already lives there lol. If the reasoning for coming to Alabama isn't cost of living...I'd be staying out west.

No butthurt here. Just a realist.

In my time here in Birmingham, I have never felt unsafe in the slightest. That is because I had family from here who gave me the list of places in town not to go unless I was looking for trouble or a little booger sugar. Since I am after neither, I have stayed to the south side of the tracks and over the mountain. I have the shittiest car in town and it's a newer BMW. The scariest thing that will ever happen is someone almost running a red light because it's some soccer mom checking out her new Versace bag and Michael Kohrs winter gloves.

Don't fear the hype. Scotty and Andrew were JUST talking last weekend about how "most of Huntsville is scary. I will NOT go to [so and so] when the sun starts going down". Everywhere has those areas. Just like people live in and enjoy Chicago and Detroit, you just gotta know what hood to not walk up in.

we never said "most of". I literally stated north of I-565 in my post to avoid. There are just more areas to avoid in/near Bham lol.

I ain't disagreeing that you can know the bad areas and avoid them...but there's a reason Bham makes those lists and HSV doesn't...

Yeah, but like if you stay out of Ensley and Tarrant...you won't become a statistic. Assuming he doesn't move into Ensley, I think it's kind of a moot point. Lol

you're right, every area CAN be dangerous. gave my reasons above to each from my experiences. HSV is nowhere near his family (well aside from being closer than Colorado lol) so I have a feeling it isn't included in the discussion anyways.

If you like the outdoors than I would stay in Colorado. You wont have the opportunities for outdoor recreation in Alabama that you have in Colorado. The Southeast just doesn't have the public land that you guys have out west.

    Appreciate all the info, thanks!

Ideal world, a small plot of .5 to 1 acre with a nice house in a good community with good schools and no HOA…

Not into the city thing, don’t mind visiting it and leaving it when I’m done but not really my thing. Country is hard to tell, I’ve lived in the burbs for so long and never really in the true country that I just don’t know. I would say that stretch of area just as you are leaving the burbs and getting into the country.

    This is good to hear!

We have 3 kids, a 22 yo mostly on his own, a 19 yo in college and a soon to be 3 yo…schools are going to be important. Good info, thanks!

This is a big part of the discussion about the move. We don’t get into the scenic areas as much as we’d like though but that’s our fault, not anything else. The weather is another big deal, not too hip on the humidity thing you all have going on down that way.

Good to know as this is a concern.

Currently work for Centurylink doing inside plant work but have experience in the NOC with both long haul and metro fiber networks and customer circuits.

Being closer to family and friends is a large part of the move and I would say the 2.5 hour drive from Huntsville would be at the max if not too far.

We’ve been in CO for 20 years this year and can feel the squeeze of the influx of people over the last 10ish years. The traffic is nothing like LA but it does suck. I currently leave work at 3pm because of the traffic difference if I left at 3:30 but I’m lucky and can almost make my own hours here.

you pretty well described South Huntsville as a desirable area, in my opinion, but it is far from family. Get input from the others about locations outside of Birmingham similar to what you want, though I wouldn't even want to commute to work in Birmingham either. good luck with your decision making and we look forward to having you!
