I have driven them...sure are hoot...have a couple moto buds that have them. 15 mpg tops...10 while towing. Torque is spot on...mileage (meh)

Also have a couple buds with the 5.0...while not near as fun as the Eco, they do get better mileage...in all reality more than enough power for me.

I don't doubt they are great engines. I too just worry what the costs will be when the turbo burns out right after warranty. I just don't like the ridiculous size of full size trucks. I feel weird driving them.

Way too big. WAY too big. Especially for a two car garage when trying to get two cars in it.

Heaviest trailer I'll ever pull is 3500 lbs. Easily capable with a Tacoma V6. I see why some people drive big trucks. I just don't want to. I think that's why many of us drive Tacomas.

Majority of that I tow is under 2000 lbs...I am real close to max payload though on my bike trips.

I try to justify a fullsize truck...I simply can't for 95% of the stuff I do. I looked at the Eco's...just don't get the mileage I want....their girth gets real noticeable out on the trail. I could make a F150 RCSB fullsize work, but I like that extra space behind the the front seats of the Access Cab for tossing our MX gear bags, which the F150 RC doesn't have...if I go to a extra cab fullsize...it starts getting a bit long for what I need and want. Tundra RCSB is would work, then the mileage goes to shit...so that comes back to the Tacomas, they will for sure get 20+ mpg...achieves most of what I need and want it to do.

The Taco seems to be the Goldilocks of trucks...not too big, not too small...while not perfect...it fits most of the bill of some of us

Oh gawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwd. These hillbilly platitudes are beyond meaningless. What does this even mean. I'll give you a hint, it means nothing without context. Ya that powerstroke has injector problems. What?! Here's a novel idea, if you want to make a general claim about millions of vehicles, the claim needs to come in the form of relative frequency or median mileage for failure. 60% of Powerstrokes have to have their injectors replaced by 160,000 miles. See, that actually has some meaning. Granted, I just made it up, but it is a meaningful statement.

I've never weighed it. They say about 750 lbs less than the last generation F150. I'll check the door sticker tonight.

5500 lbs my guess? My buddy's F150 2006 crewcab is about 6000 lbs.

    Whole lotta stuff
If I recall the original post, it was 286HP/279 Ft Lb for the Akinson. If this engine is capable of switching between Akinson and Otto, there will be more power available.

Heck I'd be happy with just the Akinson numbers. If a timing-retarded engine is capable of 286HP (remember HP is the rate at which torque is produced), while achieving a better margin of MPG, that's good enough for me. The 4.0L with the TRD supercharger is only rated for 302HP at the expense of fuel economy for reference.

Edit: Also, this a great thread. Keep it up.

~286hp seems like decent power to me, but am I the only one skeptical that Toyota would build a purely Atkinson-cycle only engine for a truck?

But they're not, the 7GR will integrate both cycles.

I am hoping that's the case. Also, that seems like an excellent move to do, so that's what I *hope* they are doing with the 7GR or 2GR-FKS...whatever it is.

My point being that we don't know, and *if* the truth turns out to be single-cycle Atkinson, I would be surprised at the choice and very curious to see how the performance numbers stack up to the competition.

286HP/279 torque. 20% HP increase, 2% torque increase. I was hoping for more of a kickass tow motor packaged into a midsize. Not more tow CAPABILITY, but better tow ABILITY. Peak torque is what counts for that, not peak HP.

I was probably hoping for too much from the get go. I was hoping for 310 peak torque and say 270 peak HP with a 5800 redline.

4.0 supercharged is about 325 peak torque, that is a big deal. Cost you some fuel with 91 octane, cost you $5k but it will tow 4000 lbs like a champ attached to a 4400 lb tow vehicle.

I don't know what we'll end up seeing all I know is what I want to see and that is 310 peak torque, 270 peak HP, no more than 5800 redline in a 4400 lb curb weight 4WD truck. That is hitting it out of the park.

^They're also bringing back Power ECT, so that might help along those lines as well.

I want 300 peak HP, 300 peak torque, and 30 MPG highway! The golden 3's!
