Looks like trade in values are down quite a bit

I contacted a local dealer because they had a used Tundra at a pretty decent price. It was a 16 Limited for $30k with 70k miles. Figured I see if they would take my 17 Taco Sport Manual with 50k miles plus $5k. They told me my trade in was $21k. Yikes. So maybe they will change their minds by the end of the year if it is still sitting there. All good I just thought that black leather interior and a little more room would be nice on those cross country trips. The Tacoma will do for a few more years and then we will see if the new Tundra is amazing or a flop.

They probably having a hard time selling anything right now. I've never seen a dealer give a good price for a trade in anyway. They hide a lot on paper to make you feel better about a new to you vehicle.

I'm surprised they wouldn't go higher. I had a 2019 Jetta that I was able to talk them up from 13k to 16.8k on trade in but, I was buying new so, maybe that's why.

They probably don’t want one used vehicle for another. Doesn’t really solve their inventory problem. I figured I would take a shot though. Plus they may get desperate for an easy 5k later on.

Sell privately. 2017 Taco 4x4 sport with manual and leather?!. I don't need another truck but I'll give you $22,000 for it. I'm sure there's a person out there that'll pay waay more than that.

Lol, the Tundra has the leather. Mine is a sport with the cloth seats. It’s not all that important to me. The Limited interior just got me and it’s an Inferno so I figure I could bring it home and my wife wouldn’t notice for a few days.lol

I did think it would be worth 24 on the trade which would mean I need to get about 26 private with the almost 9% tax rate in NY.

Trade-ins seem pretty fair in the PNW still, though there is a Toyota truck premium out here. I traded in my 2016 TRD Sport (DCSB, 6MT, 43k miles, rough to fair condition interior due to my dog) on Saturday and got $24,000 for it (and no I didn't get the runaround on the sale side either). NADA listed fair trade in right at around $24k. They even paid me pennies on the dollar for my "mods" but it's still better than the mod penalty most get on trade-in. They've got it listed on their used site for $30k and someone will probably walk away with it for 28k.

Back in 2016, I "ordered" it new and the purchase price was $33.8k. I'm going to miss Toyota depreciation (lack thereof).

    OME and worth every penny.
yea, this really plays a big part the more these vehicles go.

Whoever buys it is paying your tax and then their own again to switch over, making private sale less attractive to a buyer. May as well buy new.

Dealer is going to bend you over somehow though or they can't sleep at night.

Agree that trades values may be down some due to lower demand, but that also means you can get better deals to pay less on the purchase side.

I traded a car in mid Feb for a new Tacoma. I got a good valuation on my trade. I have no doubt that if I did a deal today that while my trade value would be lower, my net pricing would be lower.

I’m sure if I was buying new it would have been different. But if I am spending over $50k for a truck I am going to wait for the new Tundra in 2 years or roll the dice on a new Rebel with a warranty. I was just looking at this Tundra thinking they may just go for it. They still may if it sits there long enough. I was looking at some used Rebels. Maybe they would make better offer but I am hesitant to go used Ram.

Whatever you do, don't limit yourself to shopping in just NY. Shop at the very least within a day's drive. Flights are especially cheap now too. I went Ram but went new and am absolutely buying max warranty lol. If you get on the forums you'll see they definitely aren't as reliable as Toyota but offer more in other places.

I will definitely look all over east coast. I came down to Florida for a week last month and stayed for almost 2 months now. We had it planned since last year but when covid happened we just ended up staying in a Airbnb. I found a sweet Rebel in SC but my Taco is only 3 years old and if I go and spend $50k on a new truck it may cost me my marriage. Haha. Just kidding but she would torture me for a few days.

Haha I cross shopped a Rebel as well and picked Hydro Blue for the PW. Had I gone Rebel I would've spec'ed it just like the one in the pic. Though their website pricing seems more in line with an eco-diesel from one of the Boise discount dealers.

For the sake of staying on topic, if you have a Carmax near by you can always get a free appraisal from them. It's almost always on the absolute bottom of what you could get but is ultimately a cash offer regardless of what your plans are.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind. That Rebel is only $53,000. Very tempting. Your truck must look awesome love that color. Feel free to post a pic.

$21k isn’t that much but still a lot. Some pre-owned tacos go for as much as a new one, don’t understand that.
    That’s how I got my taco, a pre-owned one was $5k less.
