Whoa, this write-up is just a little overcomplicated. You should be able to pinch the ashtray and pull it out. Just pinch the door and the metal track, it will compress and you can slide it out. Then you can take apart the ash tray mechanism to redo the spring. It's two steps. LOL.

I just put strips of electric tape on ashtray rails, Still going strong after 2 years.

I don't know about his fix, but I super glued 1/8" strips of business cards on both sides. My ashtray fix has lasted me, 15+ years
