I apologize in advance as this is a bit of a lengthy discussion! Thank you for all the help in advance as well.

I have a 97 tacoma with the 5vz-fe. I was doing the timing a couple days ago and there’s a little washer that sits behind the main idler tensioner pulley that I lost.

I found some old spare washers I had and used that instead as I was in a bit of a rush to get it back together. The problem was, when I torqued the tensioner (30 something ft/lbs), it sat tight and didn’t allow the tensioner to pivot on the bolt (which is the job of the washer). Since I needed to get the truck back on the road, I decided to tighten the bolt up enough to be tight but loose enough to pivot on the bolt, allowing the tensioner to tension the belt.

When I pulled the pin, I went to tighten the bolt a bit more since the belt was already tight, but it only spun in the hole, not tightening nor getting looser. I thought the bolt was stripped but it backed out just fine. I just wrenched it back to the point where it spins (relatively tight but not 30ft/lbs) and called it good because I needed it in the morning. It fired right up and has been running fine for these last couple days.

I bought a bolt and washer off of eBay to put in this weekend but just thought I’d throw this on here to get some opinions:

Do you reckon I should keep the bolt and washer in case something happens or is it not worth reopening up the timing and needing to reset the tensioner and all the rest for a bolt that doesn’t entirely need to be torqued as it’s not holding down the bearing in the middle? Thanks in advance, again!
