Decided to wash the truck today, 500 miles on her. Mine came with wheel locks from the factory. In fact all 4 have the standard green paint on each one like many items on the truck which means they were "checked". While I was washing the wheel I noticed both locks on the drivers side were completely loose and I would say just a few threads from coming off.

Tells me the paint is meaningless. I can understand one supposedly came loose, but both being loose tells me bad assembly.

Check em if you got em....Scary. All other ones were tight.

Blame your dealership. I'm certain it's on the PDI

PDI usually requires checking torque on lug nuts....just saying

You don't check your own lugs? Wtf is happening to vehicle owners? Next you're gonna blame low air pressure on someone other than yourself!

No, I don't normally check them on a week old vehicle.

I know trucks are different than boat trailers, but when we sell a new boat we check the lug nut torque and always tell the customer to check it again at 500 miles, and once a month thereafter. I do this on my vehicles also.
Sure they should have been checked during PDI, but lug nuts have been known to back off. Its your vehicle, your life, but I always double check myself.

Exactly, lugs should be checked regularly. Especially necessary on a brand new vehicle who's wheels have not yet been on for an extended length of time/miles.

Someone was gonna jack your wheels, got spooked and left them loose.

Always start a heist with the locking lugs. Which really aren't that secure.

Or maybe the minimum wage kid at the dealer couldn't find your key, or their master key set, so shrugged it off and called it good w/5 out of 6?

You shouldn't have to check lugs on a brand new vehicle. Says nothing about the owner, in fact the fact he noticed it is more than most car owners.

I do agree with checking them periodically, as with anything, but still 500 miles and 2 are loose. I think OP has a right to say WTF.

Not really, its more like a low wage body doing a PDI. I mean think about it, you are getting paid 9 dollars an hour to go over stuff that you feel should have been done at the factory, are you really going to care about your job. I get it, I do PDI´s at my shop, but I am also a certified Mercury Tech and take pride in my work. Most of the things on a PDI check list are things you wouldn´t feel like you need to check on a new vehicle, but the factory does have some lazy workers as well.

Sorry, not buying it. Even if the lugs were zipped tight at the factory they should be checked again after some mileage.

Edit: your other reply is essentially what I'm saying.

2 loose nuts after 500 miles, I don't know that sounds like they were never properly torqued, I check mine, do all my maintenance, and I've never seen them back off as much as OP was saying on 2 wheels at 500 miles. I'm wondering if they were installed at the dealer improperly, etc.

Chris-you have been having some problems with this new vehicle- hood vibrations, loose factory installed tonneau cover and now loose lug nuts- sorry man, lets see pictures of your ride and then I will gladly admit I was wrong.

I also do plenty of auto and engine work, etc and am now new to cars and agree usafwx that they were never tight to begin with based on how far out they both were. If it had been just one I might have thought it came loose but both locks on the same side every other nut and lock was correct.

Just a headsup that mine were not correctly done from Toyota...
As well as the lower control arms are not plugged and I have the howl and the hood adhesive was also not correctly done.

I am sure Fords have 100x this but these items are all pretty basic and surprising to see.

My dad's raptor in 2014 (new at the time), not a single issue. My mom's 2013 Explorer also no issues. I'm sorry but Toyota's QDR is slipping, whether its their process, people or product, one can only guess.

I'm happy to take a pic since the point today was washing the car and that's how the nuts came up.

I don't understand though, what would you be admitting you are wrong about? You don't think I own the Tacoma?
