These vehicles (and all, as I recall) have a key-slot to unlock the steering even if dead. And bed-tow-trucks have a winch. No need to start again after fearing significant oil loss.

OP did not mention skid plate and did not mention oil where the oil filter housing supposedly grounded/was-pinned.

That is before the dealer ever had it.

If it was one of those chain Oil Change shops, like Quikie Lube, etc., they always put a sticker in the windshield telling you to come back in 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Her oil change was 4 months ago... so they will tell her to pound sand.

i can't imagine the oil filter canister coming loose. i torque mine to spec and it is always snug to get off. if i ever let anyone else change the oil in this truck, i would be inspecting it right after, checking the oil level, and checking it again the following day or two.

as most know, changing the oil is not difficult but with the gasket for the drain plug and two 0-rings and torque specs for the canister, you really need to be paying attention and preferably sober.

as far as damaging it, i do not see how that is even possible unless the skid plate were removed.

this is a cluster and based on what has been posted, i do not see a favorable outcome for the OP.

    there’s nothing to imagine
    Truck is dropped off
    Explained to SA
    writes description in RO
    Read by tech
    Examined by tech
    Pictures taken

says it was taken elsewhere prior
    Usually means double gasketing filter
    Drain plug loose
Peel off not removed from filter
    Filter left loose

This is the same as the last blown engine.

Go get a meeting with someone as high up as possible at the dealer, and tell them to prove it. They can’t.
Then tell them to fix it. Keep going until someone fixes it or they prove it was negligence that caused it

Owners shouldn't have to check the work done on their vehicles after taking it to a shop.

After my first experience, that became a habit I started doing.

OP, sorry to hear about your predicament.

    certainly a possibility
    but 4 months passed
    not likely.

    never seen a filter
    for these trucks
    with a peel off
    whatever that is

    filter is installed
    in a canister
    can't be left loose
    maybe you mean
    the canister was left loose
    and not the filter

    i'd imagine so

Agreed ^^^ With the little information known it sounds like previous shop, or quick lube flavor of the day, may have completed a poor install and the wheeling and getting stuck may have put it over the edge. Sometimes poor craftsmanship takes a little while to show up. Either way I agree with others that if properly installed the filter should not come "loose/off". I took off the retaining clip first oil change 80 thousand miles ago. I have a well-earned distrust for dealerships, but in this case, I do not see how they could be at fault with the current information the OP has given.

Pursuing Toyota for a definitive answer that it's not a warranty fix might be helpful in figuring out by who & how this was caused.

The lesson here: Do your own maintenance, then there's only one dumbshit touching your truck.

I'd like to know more about the mud and gravel excursion that needed a pull. Did the truck get a wash and look-over for damage or just rode hard, put away wet?
