Yeah no problem lol. So basically this round of mods started with a decision to down size the trailer which is a story in it self. Basically we really just don't need to drag that much stuff around and want something allot smaller. We're tossing around the idea of building an short bus but leaning towards building a squaredrop style trailer. Not needing to tow the big trailer I of course want to put some big tires on and unfortunately the only options for 16" wheels are the typical 12.5" wide tires. Meanwhile theres so many more useful tire options for 17s like 275 80r17 or the 35x10.5r17. As far as sticking with the TRD wheels I like narrow tires and the OEM wheels are pretty much the only alloy option with narrow sizes for the taco i.e. 17x7 +4 offset. With that said I actually wasn't planning on doing this so soon but everything went on sale around July 4 and obviously I jumped on it. The TRD wheels were around $150 free shipping and those big tires were at $158 free shipping which is really cheap for a 35. I do have the 16s up for sale and used one of the 255 85s as a spare so at least I'm closer lol. The other three 255s will probably be on the squaredrop if I start that build this fall.

I remember your pics when you first got the trailer. You should go for the bus... sounds awesome

Ever check out this one? He's working on 3rd gens now. Has stuff on Instagram as well.

When you mention the tire options, makes sense to get the 17s. Thanks for the info. I hear that narrow tires also get better gas mileage.

Wow that camper looks really nice! Looks awesome on the taco platform as well.
The only thing holding me back on the bus is the size. I was completely in and wanting to do a ujoint 4x4 kit and build camper bus until we test drove one. I was picturing E series van but I guess I had to see it in person to appreciate all 16000lbs of ford van schoolbus. It truly would be a PITA for a guy like me that works on his vehicles in his garage. The 7.3 stuffed in the tiny engine bay was also a concern as far as field repairability. Luckily the one we test drove shifted terribly and and had no tranny fluid on the dipstick so it was an easy pass which gave me some more time to think about it. At this point I'm we're really leaning towards the squaredrop for camping trips due to the fact it will be way cheaper than an RV or sprinter conversion and build time shouldn't be too long.

If driving a school bus is anything like riding in one, that's explanation enough for me. Probably some kind of sign that the bus was a piece of whammy to steer you in the right direction. If you go with the motor home, then you may need to tow a vehicle. If there is no reason to spend all that money, don't do it.

You're definitely tow ready right now so the custom squaredrop would make sense. Many squaredrops I have seen appear to be off road friendly with the single axle and smaller size.

Definitely include the new camper in your build, or start a new build page for the project.

Looks great. Your truck has really evolved over the last few years. I've enjoyed watching the transformation. Any progress on trailer planning?

Thanks! Not really any progres still just tossing around ideas. It seems like every week there is a different plan so really not wanting to rush into it. Our main priorities are mobility for exploration, large water storage capacity because I like my showers and a large comfortable sleeping area. We were talking about building an offroad teardrop trailer but also consider a utility style trailer with a few cabinets, a big RTT, and exterior shower. It would be a smaller platform and larger sleeping area than a teardrop. So yeah basically I have no idea what were doing except we will be doing something lol. Luckily for me It's stupid hot in Phoenix right now so I won't start building till fall anyway.

Found I needed a little more cutting for the 35s after doing some wheeling.

Where’s your spare? Can you cram your spare under the bed?

With some persuasion (hammering) you can fit a ~34x11.5.

The spare is under the bed. Still undersized though. One of my old 255 85s.

We rented a smaller offroad teardrop trailer for the weekend. It was nice to use it but we really wanted to see how something this size pulls compared to current setup before committing to a new build. This little thing pulled so easy! With the OVT gearlock transmission function I was able to pull 5th gear uphill with trans temps in the 160s-170s.

We also really liked the smaller trailer as far as camping. We will most likely build something similar in size but organized a little better and sleep in a RTT. All in all awesome weekend in the white mountains!

My wife and I went to Colorado for a few weeks. What an awesome and beautiful place! It was the first trip in a while without the Taco and trailer. I definitely learned I need to have some means of preparing my own food since I hate eating out all the time. Also we would've been better off sleeping on a pile of sand bags than some of the Air BnB beds. While hanging around the Ouray and Silverton area there were big jeeps and toyotas everywhere so it was actually a little painful not having my truck...
This expierence really did lite a fire under my ass to get to work on a smaller expo style trailer. Hopefully we'll have something usable together by May.

With the trailer build on the horizon it's time for some shop upgrades. I needed a 120v compressor for plasma cutting since I only have one 50 amp breaker to the garage. This compressor will get the job done for my needs. Also built a bracket and mounted extension cord and air hose reels. No more winding stuff up at the end of the day!!

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Plasma cutter and Bandsaw coming soon. I can't get any kind of precision out of this evolution saw and its deafening even with hearing protection....

The lock out function allows the for closer to true gear selection while in S-mode. Meaning if you select 5th gear while in S-mode the transmission will not shift up or down without operator input.
