I drive some coworkers home from work and when they get out when i pull up to the curb, the key truck loses connection to the keyfob and the warning on the dash pops up and beeps. normally this lasts for maybe 30 seconds before it finds the key again but sometimes it never finds it and i need to park and turn the truck off and back on again to get it to stop. the issue doesnt seem to happen with the drivers door.

ive replaced the battery in the keyfob twice now and it still has the issue and it has never given me the warning of a low battery either. i only have the 1 key fob now since i lost the other one a long time ago so i cant check if its a problem with the fob.

things ive done to the truck are added a 2nd battery located behind the rear driver side passenger seat running off the alternator and solar panels thats grounded to the ground location to the frame above the driver side rear wheel. i dont think this would be it because that modification has been around for 8+ months when this issue has been around for just a month. the connections seem fairly clean for being in the wheel well.

    any suggestions?

edit: its also intermittent. not every time they open their doors to get out or in does this happen, maybe 1/3 of the time? and if it doesnt happen it wont happen at all for that ride or day. when it does happen it happens every time the doors are opened. so giving it to the dealer is a crap shoot since most likely the issue wont happen when they have it.

thats a new one. If I had to guess, its probably an issue with the key transponder or with the immobilizer.

this might sound weird but also check the battery under the hood. Weird stuff happens when the battery starts to fail

I hope I never have to buy a new car for myself or the wife. I know my Tacoma will outlive me and my son will get a nice ride. But my wife is in excellent health.

    Between Key-Fobs and this Start-Stop b.s. she'd go crazy.... I'd make the six-o'clock news.

One big reason I went with the SR5 is because it uses a key.

    Sounds like aftermarket electric issues

I'm guessing that its the fob. When you changed the battery, did you clean the contacts? Take a magic eraser and polish the little terminals. See if it improves.

Check the door open switches. They are a trigger to a few systems, they tell the Main Body ECU they are open to trigger the cab illumination, lock system of the doors, alarm system, etc.
