This happened when I drove across country on the passenger side, my trip up to GA it happened again and now on both sides. Any recommendations on how to prevent this?

This is a white paint Toyota from 2004-ish onward issue.

You can try touch up paint and some clear vinyl rock guard stuff. If it’s like their other paint peel issues it’s due to shitty primer not bonding well to the color coat or vice versa.

I’d not take any strong tape to any areas either, might pull paint with it, like if you go to mask off things to paint or wax, etc.

Can confirm I did this to my hood when I installed hood latches... it wasn't strong tape either, blue masking tape.

Happening to my '06 black paint as well. Noticing it the most on the door handles. Which makes sense based on how often that is touched

That happens because those areas of paint was probably missed with the clear coat and the paint is not protected. The damaged has been done and it can’t be corrected without new paint. To protect going forward, use some paint sealant every 4 months. It’s easy to apply and really helps. I use meguiar’s polymer sealant.

Toyota’s Super White is a single stage paint with white and clear mixed together.

I have read that before on the internet but it’s not true. It would defeat the purpose of the clear coat to begin with, so there would be no reason to even mix.

Adding clear makes the paint pop. I have seen it done. I have seen letters posted from Toyota substantiating the claim.

@Too Stroked you have any info on this?

Regardless a sealant is not a replacement for proper prep. If the paint is flanking that is prep issue at the primer level.

White is a single stage paint. The clear is mixed into the white as one coat.

    It is indeed true.

I have seen the letters also.

    Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry.

The Super White paint applied to your Tundra is a single stage paint coating. Vehicles painted with non-metallic colors have no clear coat finish. Paint colors that are available in a metallic or pearl will have a clear coat finish.

We hope this information has been helpful.

If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us http://www.toyota.com/help/contactus.html.

    Sincerely,

    Ivette Moreno
    Toyota Customer Experience

Agree it is just poor prep and low bonding issue.

Thank you everyone, looks like I'll try calling Toyota to see if they can do anything for me. If not I'll see about doing it myself.

I called my local Toyta dealership and I mentioned the paint recall. They said it only applies to the Tundra (as of now) but the guy also said they can sometimes make exceptions for other vehicles (ie the Tacoma) with the same paint code. Going to go in on Monday to see what they can do.
