Outside of the dealer, is there a more economical way to get a spare?

A lot depends on what key you have key/remote or keyless. Also, do you still have your second key? Locksmiths can usually beat the dealer price but have limits in what they can do as well. There is key cloning. Adding remotes, etc. if you have totally blown it, the dealer is the only one who can get your key code by VIN and punch a new key.

When I bought my SR5, I got two keys, one key had a small metal tag with numbers on it- the salesman told me to keep that in a safe place since it would save time getting a new key made- do you have this?

If you have the cables and techstream, you can program your own key. Smart keys take more time. I have an MT and was able to sync a new remote to my truck.

Did you not get a spare set with the truck?

Another joyful reminder of why I hope to never have to have fancy keys. Just a plain ole key suits me just fine.

@Cfuss I certainly hope you can find a reasonable solution!
