    I have a 2020 TRD OR M/T.

Key is the fob/key combo - the engine is started using the key, not push-button. I purchased from a dealer used, and it only came with one key. My dumb ass never got a backup key. Now the only key I had is MIA.

Dealer quote: ~$800. Requires vehicle on-site, meaning a tow since obviously I can't drive it.

Any suggestions? DIY? Mobile locksmith? The couple I contacted said "nope, can't do that tacoma/year."

I would resort to just about anything to avoid the swindler - I mean dealer - from cashing in on this.

Did you buy new? The dealer owes you the second key, maybe?

Time to collect it... if so...

Stab in the dark but I would search the truck, under and inside. The previous owner might have hidden the other key in case they lost a key while on an adventure.

Get quote from a locksmith and have at LEAST two extra keys made. I have three extra keys for all of my vehicles, it's cheap insurance.

Is the key fob in the truck? The dealer can cut you key to get in the cab from your VIN. That should only be about $20.

Is it possible your truck is able to detect key fob near-by? If so, that's a great clue in starting your search. If not, than just look randomly, anywhere and everywhere. Once found, I recommend tagging your keys with some loud/bright preventing another loss.
    Good luck!

Probably requires a trip to the dealer, it sounds like you have the H-key (no push button), they still have a little transmitter inside of them to let the truck know that the key is the correct one, paired to the ECU. I don't see how you would get around a trip to the dealership for a new matching key. Get 2 while you're at it.

Take your vin and proof of ownership (e.g. insurance card, registration, etc) to a dealer and they can cut or obtain a key for you. Less than $100.

Call the dealer parts dept before you make the trip in order to validate if any other document is needed.

That will get them in the cab but it won't start it.

If the truck is home, so is your solo key! Do $800 worth of searching!

Exactly, this worked a dozen years ago, on cheaper cars, but there is more going on with a modern key than just the pins lining up and the key rotating in the cylinder.

See if you can find someone local who has something like an XTool D8 or Techstream. They can program a cut key for you. Maybe they won't charge you as much as the dealer.

Exactly. If you pulled into the driveway and walked away, the key needs to be somewhere where you walked.

    To that end:
    1. How long since the vehicle has been driven?
    2. Has the trash been taken out? (I've had a friend throw his wallet in the trash since he was carrying trash in his hand at the same time, and just tossed both the trash and his wallet into the bin...)
    3. Anyone else use the truck after you?
    4. Are the doors unlocked? Can you get into the truck?

Yep new gm vehicles are the same way, happens just about every week at work. Gets pricey with towing, the transmitter and the key. I’d keep looking first. Any chance the dealer is close and can send a tech with their laptop to you to save on the tow bill?

Labor and monetizing the key programmer...
From my understanding, most DIY solutions are predicated on having one working key (or two) that will start a car. If you don't have at least one working key, I think the onboard immobilizer needs to be wiped and reprogrammed from scratch.

Chipped keys for my old Escape could be cut by anyone. As long as I had two working keys, I could add more keys. The keys were like $25 each, and I paid a locksmith a few bucks to cut them, and programmed them myself.

I found aftermarket fobs for my Taco for like $35-40 each. Since I had at least one working key, I could rent Tom's Key programmer and 1) erase all keys but one, and 2) add up to three additional keys (for a total of 4 smart fobs).

When you're one deep, you're none deep....

No easy way around it. Given the cost and the fact they are somewhere in your house... might even be worth hiring kids or outside help to do a top-down search of your house.
