I'm not going to read back 5 pages to see if this has been asked: Will your insurance cover this?

Once you get the key made see if you can connect with someone local on the site to do it for much much cheaper. hell i would do it for free just to help you out. You can get techstream istalled on your computer and if you have a OBD2 connector you can have it done.

i once hid my keys from myself in a hat i hung up. (no idea why) if you can retrace your steps that would be where i would start. pants pockets in the laundry or it fell out of your pockets and is in the bottom of the laundry basket.

Unless its simple and can be cleaned with solvents in under 5 minutes, there are just some things that I would rather replace once it enters the 4" PVC section of my house.

I'd almost rather lose the 800 bucks than run my daily errands with the poop key.

I thought about asking the "are you on sewer or septic" question but then thought about what I personally would do (or not do) if this was my missing key and the answer was septic. Fishing out the wife's priceless wedding ring she got from her great grandma is one thing. But a fucking car key, no way man!

Find some local criminals - they are stealing tacoma's around here by the hundreds and can reprogram it to their own keys in 10 minutes flat.

Having worked at an auto group for 14 years, the sales departments used to use an outside company because it was cheaper to get aftermarket keys than to get OEM keys through their own service departments. The company we used will come onsite and cut and program the keys. They do most makes and models. Used to charge us really discounted rates. Looks like for regular Joe Schmos it’s $265 for a regular Toyota H key if they are in your area.

Or you could try buying a blank H key online, see if the dealer will cut/punch it using the VIN and buy the TIS software and cable and program it yourself

I've worked at three GM dealerships and all of them would make a key for a GM product as long as you have the vin, a drivers license, and a current insurance card with your name on it and the vin for vehicle you want a key for.

I don't believe Toyota hasn't the same capability.

If you've been talking to the service department, they are most likely trying to reem you. Go to the parts department for information. And call more than one dealership.

Could be the case, in theory it sounds right.

When I looked into the spare key for our 2014 Rav4 I was told they'd have to tow it and reflash the computer if the key was lost and didn't have the spare.

Ideally it's the way you said though if OP can't get into the truck they can't get to the paperwork.

having the key cut correctly will only get him half way. They will need to do something special to program a key without a master key to grant access to the write function on the ECU

He can get the insurance information from his insurance agent if he doesn't keep receipts or extra cards in a file at home.
