I need help diagnosing what happened please! Thanks in advance.

I was driving on the expressway and I lost power to the engine and couldn't accelerate, engine seemed to still be idling.. I had to coast over to the shoulder. Check engine light (orange) flashing and trac off light.

I shut off the engine and restarted the truck and the lights were cleared. I went home and scanned it but no codes were stored. I was 5 miles from home and it ran fine.

I've noticed these last couple weeks a very short rough idle that lasts for a few seconds as I'm about to park after driving somewhere.

I'm at 111k miles and I replaced the spark plugs myself at 60k miles about 2 years ago.
(May be irrelevant but I noticed my ignition coils were burnt because the factory didn't torque down 2 of the 6 original spark plugs. I made a thread on it at the time > Spark plug came loose from factory? | Tacoma World <)

I am definitely going to replace the spark plugs and coils ASAP!

Is there anything else that I should be looking at checking or replacing?

    Thanks!

Maybe it's the CPS (crank position sensor). It's a known fault that will randomly throw the truck into limp mode

what do you mean by that, just needs a visual inspection or cleaning?

Is your truck in the fuel pump recall range?

    Oh look, another mod....

A sudden loss of power while driving USUALLY (I could be wrong) points to a faulty fuel pump of clogged fuel filter. The clogged filter would explain the rough idling.

I would clean it first and then go from there. I don’t think this is limp mode.

I'll have to check, gonna look now..
I was actually thinking about replacing the fuel filter too. I think I'm overdue at 111k miles..

I just checked with my VIN on Toyota.com/Recall and it said "[IMG] There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle."

I'm leaning towards my fuel filter now..

i think the only fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump. but this sounds like a bad crankshaft position sensor.

My money is on this. OP google CPS symptoms Tacoma and you’ll find results exactly like you have here.

It was fairly common back in 16-17 that I carry a spare one in my glove box.

Highly doubt it’s a fuel filter or a dirty TB. Clogs don’t usually completely clear when you cycle the engine. Electrical problem do however.

thank you. It makes sense. I didn't know the fuel filter was apart of the fuel pump assembly... I thought it was a quick swap out... I'll definitely order a new Crankshaft position sensor!
thank you! I just bought one online and picking it up from a local dealer, hopefully tomorrow. $115 with tax..

If you still have the issue after you have replaced the CPS it could be the ACIS. The cheap plastic shaft on the assembly breaks and when ACIS is activated the truck will go into limp mode. There are multiple posts about this you can search for more information.
