i locked my tailgate and have the cover, and I lost my key.

I have a push button so don't say the main key.

How do I get in? I called the dealers and locksmiths and it seems I am screwed?!?!

When you first bought the truck they should give you the keys with the metal piece that has a number on there, dealer should be able to help you with that.

I'm afraid of the same thing happening. Before I lose my key, I'm going to install a pop & lock on the rear tailgate so that it locks and unlocks with the doors.

Good luck. The dealer should be able to help you via your VIN.

We had it happen at work. Toyota didnt have key codes for the tailgate key at that time so we had to replace the lock cylinder. In your case a locksmith should be able to pick that lock in no time. I can do the small tumblers in truck caps and gas caps in a few seconds with a screwdriver and paper clip.

Pop and lock.... adds a solenoid to the tailgate lock and wires into the existing harness so that the tailgate locks and unlocks with the doors.

Check out Google for pop and lock.

Recently resolved a similar issue. Tailgate key didn't convey with my truck. When I went looking for a replacement my dealership was clueless how to replace it. First they said the metal tab on my key ring was all they needed, then they said it was only good for the ignition key. I called Toyota corporate because my dealer has been "trying to figure out what to do" for months. In the end they replaced the entire lock assembly, claiming that was the only solution. Now I have two metal key tabs: one for my ignition key and one for my tailgate key. I was left confused by the whole ordeal but at least I have a tailgate key now.

See if you can remove the inner cover on the tailgate - or at least the top edge of it enough to loosen it and get your hand in there. From there, you should be able to unlock it with your hand the same way a solenoid would. If your whole hand won't go, even a piece of stiff wire should be able to do it. It doesn't take much force at all.

My ignition key opens the tailgate on my 2016. Two keys came with truck, both turn ignition, doors, and tailgate.

This was another reason that pushed me towards getting the manual transmission.

Wow .... I didn't know that! The TRD OR AUTO is push button, so we have a separate key.

OP, the key is a basic double sided key. Take it to a locksmith and get an estimate. Maybe $50 bucks and he/she can pick open the lock and then make a key for you. We lost a key for an enclosed trailer. Procrastinated for over a month, then $50 later was all done.

Yea the MT Taco doesn't have a smart key so it come with 2 regualar key fobs that open the doors, tailgate and start the ignition. I didn't want to carry another extra key for the tailgate so that was another good thing for me about the manual.

There is a storage clip underneath the lid of your center console which seems to be made/designed for the tailgate key. I know it doesn't help now, but in the future if you don't want to always carry the tailgate key I would get an extra copy to keep one there.

So my car got broken into over the weekend and my tailgate key was stolen.

Will that key work on the driver door as well? or just on the tailgate?

curious if i need to get my locks replaced or not do anything.

i dont keep anything in the bed, and I have a Leer Topper so they would have to open the topper window first before getting into the tailgate anyways.

    I have a 2016 DCSB OR.

    any feedback is greatly appreciated!
